Hacking in the 80s, True in the Film

Just thought it would be fun to relive some memories and shed some insight on what was true to life in this great interpretation film. It's true that the directors did spend time researching various hacker forums like through CDC cult of the dead cow, Alt2600, and Phrack magazine. They took many hacks that were very real during the 80s that didn't work any longer in the 90s. Like building a Blue Box dialer to play real phone frequencies back into a receiver to bring up special dialing options. Dumpster diving was very real and collecting phone tech manuals with the nick names we had for the different types of manuals found like "The big blue book that's too big to fit on a shelf". There were many things that must of made 80s hackers chuckle after seeing them brought to life. Many attitudes hackers held about being elite vs being a lamer and care for our handles were right on. Reputation was everything, Many of us got into hacking through phreaking initially and from there we could be less alone and would find each other and meetup on Bridges formed by linking open phone calls together to make basic conference calls where we could chat and experiment dialing long distance into other services while we all listened in and attempted various social engineering challenges. One time on our bridge we took an open line and hacked into a very simple sex chat line, then we opened another line and hacked into a just as simple gay sex line, thus linking the two chat lines together and listening to the fireworks happen as chaos ensued.
There was also a very specific scene in the film that was important to every hacker in the world during the 80s that few people will recognize. When the FBI agent Dick Gill is reading hacker messages to the other agent. He reads the True Hacker Manifesto from The Mentor of the Legion of Doom, a famous real life hacker group from 70s-80s.
So even though there were things done to add style to the movie hackers and make it appeal more to the masses. There was really a lot of love and interest taken from the true hacker underground and an honest intent to capture what was in many hacker hearts & minds during the 80s. This was a very nostalgic time for me and this movie always brings a smile to remember those times by. Give it some respect!
