If both Jack Lemmon & Walter Matthau were still alive, would you think they would make a 3rd grumpy old men movie, but this one titled as Grumpiest Old Men. I have a plot for it.

Yes, I certainly think they would have, but you have to remember - most of the magic is gone now with the passing of the irreplaceable Burgess Meredith, both his Granpa Gustafason character and in real life. Throw in the passing of Ossie Davis as well (though his character also dies, in the first film). Its kind of sad how most of the priciples are now gone, so relatively soon after both films were made.

I remember hearing that there was going to be a 3rd film. I remember hearing that this film's plot would focus on one of Sophia Loren's character's previous husband. However, the actor that they had chose to play the part died in pre-production for the film. I think this was Marcello Mastroianni, but I am unsure.
Even if they both were still alive, and I realize the OP's topic is seven years old now, but even at that moment the momentum would have been long gone and studios very rarely resurrect projects they canceled before because they deemed them not to be profitable.

Well, we kinda do have a third installment, it's called Out to Sea (1997).
I suppose if both Jack and Walter were not busy filming that movie as well as The Odd Couple II (1998) at the time, they could have started production immediately after this one and made it a complete trilogy. I'm assuming that was their intention.
But, unfortunately, Walter Matthau was probably ill and couldn't make anymore films. He passed away in 2000, proceeded by Jack Lemmon's passing in 2001.
They could still do one about their widows, Grumpy Old Women. And it could take place on a cruise as an homage to Out to Sea
