molly who

i must say that this movie had the worst fashion i have ever seen the girls clothes were so embarassing and wasnt it suppose to be in like 1980>? it doesnt work at all! oh and by the way am i the only one sensing a little sexual tension between beth and jodie>? but i do love this movie!!!

reply

Little sexual tension????LOL
Oh my God!!!!
Are you crazy????They are just very good friends.

reply

not crazy at all,
besides friendship there was a lot of tension, especially at the beginning
(which is logical as Anna played kind of a boyish caracter)

reply

I don't think the makers of this movie meant to imply anything sexual between the 2 girls since this movie was made for kids. If you're picking up on that it must be wishful thinking. I agree Anna Chlumsky does seem a bit butch, but this was a fantasy/freindship movie aimed at teen and pre-teen girls. I saw this on ABC family for God's sake!!

reply

beth did make a statement in the beginning saying jodi was the most beautiful woman she'd ever seen, or something along those lines.

i was totally thinking they were gonna hook up, haha, kid movie or not.

reply

i mean, lots of kids movies from the era featured boys and girls with similar relationships to the one between jodie and beth. in those films, there would possibly be one kiss, but they never portray the child characters as having a "sex life". gold diggers (arguably) portrays two girls who could possibly be lesbians discovering their attraction to eachother in early adolesence. since lesbian kisses cause controversy in mainstream films, and especially in children's films, they could never have had them kiss on screen. even if the film makers had been able to do whatever they wanted without worrying about ratings and marketing, i doubt either character would have come out as a lesbian. this is because they are both very young. not so young that they are asexual, but too young to define their sexuality in such a way, or even to consider experimentation. they both seem to be on the path to identifying with a sexuality, however.

there is a great deal of evidence. for one thing, both girls seem disinterested in males. beth attracts the attention of her make peers, as we see at the picnic scene, but does not reciprocate the interest, an dleaves them to go see jodie. jodie, who is the butcher of the two, does not seem to attract this kind of attention because of her disinterest and her masculinized identity. both seem drawn to the other by some mystical attraction.

It truly is sad when people will create something that is not there. Good lord. Can you type of people not allow children to be friends without throwing your own pathetic agenda into the situation?

reply

So whenever I acknowledge that a friend of mine is beautiful it's because I'm a lesbian? Right. Come one, it makes more sense that Beth was making a statement of the person as a whole, as she was beautiful both inside and out, versus the shallow group of girls, some of whom were pretty, but acted like narcissistic idiots.

reply

It's not just the beautiful comment. There are many moments where I sensed a little sexual chemistry between those girls. Come on, its kind of obvious.

For starters, Jodie was pretty damn butch... a little bit past the tomboy stage. And there's one part where Christina Ricci yells at her mom for keeping them apart and says, "you can never change how i feel about her" or something similar. like... pretty intense for just a friend you met last week. And like someone else said, they both seemed very disinterested in boys, and really into each other.

It doesn't mean the movie's not entertaining; it means there is a very clear lesbian subtext that i picked up on right away. And the song at the end talks about loving somebody... yeah, pretty gay.

Did we all watch the same movie?

Where did Beth call Jody beautiful? Beth referred to Jody as "the finest" and as the "most incredible..." but never did she refer to her as beautiful.

Jody was less playing a boyish character as she was more playing a character that was emulating her personal hero and local folk legend, Molly Morgan. Molly Morgan had cut her hair off to assimilate into a group of male gold miner's and to perhaps survive in her now found world after escaping Scotland. Jody was trying to survive her own world of abuse and outcasting and very much evolved her character around Molly's. She even gave Molly's name instead of her own.

Also, where is the "aversion to boy's" that was posted about? Boy's were not main character's but when they did show two of them at the outdoor picnic party, Beth referred to them as "...two cute boys" when she was talking to Jody. That doesn't sound like aversion to me.

People need to pay attention to the story line without subjecting their own sexuality, insecurity, personal fantasy etc. upon it to find basic truths.

reply

These people throwing their agenda about them being lesbians don't care what the storyline was. They pay little attention to what really happened and distort the rest to fit their agenda. It does not matter what Molly was really doing if they can mold it to fit what they want. It is pathetic. You cannot even have to people young girls be great friends without people calling it a lesbian relationship.

reply

Your disgust for people who see lesbian subtext in this film says a lot about you. As does your double mention of "agenda." I know your post was made almost a decade ago and you'll never read this, but of all the homophobic comments written in here, yours makes my skin crawl the most.

Your paranoia of a homosexual conspiracy to pervade the world is what's pathetic.

reply

I agree... why can't a movie be entertaining and also show that the characters are growing up, seeing themselves for who they really are? Anything else, the characters would be just two-dimensional. How entertaining is that?!

As to the girls feeling sexual tension... While it's true, the girls may have been too young to realize what's going on, that doesn't mean it's not happening. It could be a phase (I've read that most people go through a phase where they have feelings for the same sex, part of developmental changes), or it could be they would have developed stronger feelings as they got older. Who knows?

"this movie had the worst fashion i have ever seen"

These were poor rural people. The way they dressed was realistic. If you ever travel to extreme rural, relatively unpopulated areas, you will see girls, especially ones that run around outside a lot, dressed exactly like these two were.

It is your inexperience that makes you misunderstand why the girls dressed the way they did.

You do know that movie makers employ costumers that try to make the way people dress as authentic as possible, right?
