There's a nugget called "The Hand of Faith" nugget, and it's 62 pounds of gold, and it looks similar in size to the size of the bag each girl got.
But using an online calculator http://goldprice.org/Calculators/Gold-Price-Calculators.html and averaging it out at just 60 pounds which equals a bit more than 27 kilos, that makes the total today over a Million dollars worth. But changing the date back to 1995 when the movie came out, it says about 300'000. Even just 10 years ago [2005] it's about the same. It's only been the last 10 years that gold has really boomed to triple the price.
Either way, it was enough money to give the girls a very good start in life.. The cost of living was much less back then.
The movie is set in 1980, so adjusting for inflation it would've been more than 300,000. Enough to have an armed bodyguard with each girl and an armoured truck to deliver it, not some middle-of-the-road lawyer and two weedy regular police officers like in the movie! And with pure gold being very heavy, it's doubtful either girl would've been able to carry the sacks around or upend them, like they're shown doing.
