pregnancy weight

I believe that George says something like, "they weighed in at 128 and 132 lbs respectively..." This weight was during the summer time after the two women were around 8/9 months pregnant. I'm on my third pregnancy and each pregnancy I've gained less weight, but I have heard that it is best to gain about 25-35 lbs. This means that both Nina and Annie would have had to weigh only close to 100 lbs before becoming pregnant. Little goof there.

reply

YES! I always thought that, that was so SILLY! Why can't they just be realistic?! Goodness. ;o)

reply

I hear you, but was any in this movie realistic? No, its just another Hollywood movie and most of them are like this unfortunately

reply

Yes, I also thought that was rediculous! Talk about making the women viewers feel bad about themselves if they can't be 128 lbs in their 9th month of pregnancy! I thought it was stupid that they even put that in the movie...I mean, geez, were Annie and Nina both anorexic twigs before they got pregnant?

reply

I always thought that was a bit off myself. Like someone said before me, what the heck did they weigh prior to their pregnancy, 100 LBS!?

However, the whole movie is kind of off. Although it is cute, it is SOOOO unrealistic. I know when I delivered my daughter I did not look as good as Kimberly Williams-Pasley and Diane Keaton. In fact, I didn't look a thing like them at the end of their pregnancies either. Hair, make-up, clothes all perfect. Come on. I looked like I got ran over by a bus because I felt like $#@&. And I too gave birth in the dead of summer. A HOT summer.

I always wondered about the weight too! I'm not even pregnant and i weight more than that!!! haha yea definitely a self esteem boost!

thats not that unusual my mom weighed 134 pounds when she was 9 months pregnant with me

A baby weighs an average of 8 pounds (give or take) and the placenta will weigh a little less than the baby so a pregnant mom can gain only 16 pounds and be perfectly healthy, just because your preggers doesn't mean you should start gaining weight outside of the placenta and the babies weight.

reply

Aren't you supposed to gain like 30 pounds....I thought that was like the recommended weight or something lol

It is recommended to gain between 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy. Of course that varies if you are overweight before getting pregnant you should not gain more than 20 pounds. If you are underweight you should gain closer to 40 pounds.

Don't forget the amniotic fluid, though - that must weigh a bit. Also the uterus apparently increases in weight because it has to increase in size with the baby, plus during a pregnancy the body makes about an extra 2 pints (I think) of blood - don't know what a pint of blood would weigh but a pint of water (568ml if you convert it to metric) weighs about 568 grams (about 1 lb 2oz).

So that must add a few extra pounds on top of what the baby and the placenta weighs.

With my first baby I weighed 110 lbs when I got pregnant, and at 8 months pregnant I only weighed 124...then it spiked that last month to 136. I think first time moms tend to gain more weight because they really give into their cravings...so this was not realistic for me. I had trouble with the weight because I was throwing up the whole time. Last month though, I felt great and at everything in sight. However, I think a higher weight gain would have seemed more real to me. I wasn't quite as sick with my daughter and I gained like 60 lbs, and that is a little more realistic to me. Thank God it was almost all water weight. lol! ohhh, and a huge baby.

Every woman does not need to gain 25-35 pounds in pregnancy. That's only an average estimate. How much weight a woman should gain in pregnancy is relative to the woman and her actual weight before becoming pregnant. It really depends on how much body fat you have prior to your pregnancy. For example, if a woman is morbidly obese at the time she pregnant, she really should not gain anymore than 15 pounds because she probably already has more than enough body fat already and gaining too much weight can be as bad as gaining too little. A woman, on the other hand, who's a little underweight at the time of pregnancy needs to increase her amount of body fat to have a healthy pregnancy, and as such, may need to gain 30-40 pounds.

I always thought it was a joke, like they didn't want to reveal how much weight they actually gained, so they gave these obviously fake numbers.

Only thing to do is jump over the moooooooooooooon!

reply

Those weights are ridiculous. They clearly weighed about that much prior to becoming pregnant! This was just not realistic at all...it was suggested that they each gained maybe 5 pounds, tops by their third trimesters. Not to mention those 3 month old "newborn" babies that had to weigh at least 10 pounds each at birth.

reply

This part of the movie always bothered me too, but your explanation makes sense and that sort of humor fits perfectly with the movie. It's also such a female thing, because if I ever get pregnant I don't think I will be shouting my weight from the rooftops.

There's the baby (about 6-10 lbs), there's the placenta (another 5 lbs), there is all that amniotic fluid, there is all that extra fluid and blood that the mom's body takes on, breasts are swollen much larger, and YES you do need to gain fat because that's what mom's body needs for survival and recovery after the birth, and to make milk for the baby. I gained more than 30 lbs when I was pregnant! It all came off after I had my baby though, without even trying. My body just did what it was supposed to, and that meant gaining weight.

reply

Pregnancy is always more glamorous in the movies and on tv. How do they manage to put on a full face of make-up before they go into delivery? Yea. Right.

reply

I think he said they weighed that much in their third trimester, not at 9 months. So if Nina was in her 7th month and Anne was in her 8th, that still gives them time to gain more weight. They could have possible only put on 10-15 lbs by that point. Plus this was mentioned during the beginning on the renovation and for that much work to the suite, i'm guessing it took a few weeks to complete.

reply

I can kind of understand how Annie could be thought to be 100 pounds before the baby weight but Nina?

reply

When I gave birth to my oldest, I weighed 129 pounds, up from 105. When I had my second, I weighed 140, up from 115. I'm now pregnant with my third and we'll see how I do there. And I don't know how tall Diane Keaton is, but the other one looked pretty tiny to me. She may very well have only weighed about 100 in the beginning.

reply

I gained 50 lbs. with each of my 2 girls (was 105 lbs before and 5'0 tall) Of course the weight just fell off right after giving birth each time and I stay at 105 lbs non-preggers. But as small as I am and I gained that much weight! It made the weight comment on this movie so unrealistic to me

I know this is an old thread but I still wanted to reply. I know their weight seemed a little ridiculous but it's definitely possible to be that weight that far along. With my daughter I weighed 125 lbs when I found out I was pregnant. I lost 10 lbs in the beginning cause I had really bad morning sickness. During the last few months of pregnancy I gained those 10lbs back plus an additional 10. I technically only gained 10 lbs over my pre pregnancy weight but I was healthy & my doctor wasn't concerned. Every person is different.

reply

I started my first pregnancy weighing 97 lbs, and I gained almost 40 pounds. Granted most of it was water retention because I had pre-eclampsia, but still. There's no way those two --who looked great, but definitely did not weigh 100 lbs to start-- only weighed 128 and 132.
