Last name for baby?

I'm rewatching the movie again and it has always bothered me that George and Nina would even think that the baby should have Banks as the last name. It's also weird that Annie and her husband were looking into mixing letters from their last name to make a new one...The first movie makes a point to show how traditional the Banks are...it's unrealistic. Please tell me I'm not alone haha

Hi Michelle (I hope it's OK to shorten it). You're not alone...in WATCHING" it! You're probably right in the traditional naming of the child but I'm afraid I haven't spent enough time watching this version to have formed an opinion yet. Give me a little time and I'll let you know what my take on it is. Meanwhile, it's nice to see someone else watching this at the same time!

I'm watching it too :)

Anyway, here's my take on the last name thing: this movie was made in 1995 - an era when feminism reminiscent of the women's lib movement from the 70's was still prevalent. It was not uncommon (although not common, either) for married women to hyphenate their last name, and subsequently pass a hyphenated name on to their children. I think the writers/producers may have used this angle to show what an independent woman Annie was; that she was not just the "daddy's girl." Also, I don't think George and Nina really wanted Annie to use the name Banks for the baby, I think they were just playing devil's advocate with Brian's parents because they seemed so adamant the baby be named after their side of the family.

Or, I could be reading into it way too much and they just needed another scene with all of the grandparents present :)

I guess I can see Chaterbox69's point as far as the hyphenation goes. I've seen it before with married women but I must admit, I've never seen the hyphen passed on to the children.

As a caveat, I'm a 51 year old guy, so I'm a little old-fashioned. but I'm trying my best to "get with it" so to speak.

I just watched the first one (right before this) and, my old-fashioned ways not withstanding, I think the whole idea of the wedding and then the baby definately leaves Steve in the background. His only function is to write checks......really BIG checks. As a husband and father (she's 21 & single) this upsets me a great deal.

I still never understood this part of the film. 2 people get married, give birth and want to give the child a completely different last name? Ridiculous!

I always thought they were surely joking...

I didn't change my name right away when I got married, but when we decided to have kids I did change it, and then our kid has DH's last name (which is now our last name).

My mom always thought I was crazy to not change my last name right away lol.

As someone who is the same age as Annie, I remember thinking back when this first came out how ridiculous the whole thing was with the last name. I especially found the combining letters thing so beyond silly. As far as the first name, that's the parents' choice and not the grandparents'!
