1996 best actrees OSCAR goes to...

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!?!?!

HELL NOOOOOOOO!!

That Oscar should go to Meryl Streep, HONESTLY!
I mean, I like Susan, she is a great actress, but sincerely Streep deserved that Oscar most than Sarandon or Sharon Stoneor other nominees.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

reply

Susan Sarandon deserved her Oscar for Dead Man Walking. Streep hasn't made any individual impact since Sophie's Choice.

reply

Plus Sarandon deserved it AND was owed a few.

reply

"owed a few?" Can you please elaborate?

reply

i think she has been nominated before, and should have won for Thelma and Louise.

reply

I think, and I am not 100% sure, but she was nominated twice before Sarandon won for Dead Man Walking:

1991- Best Actress- Thelma & Louise

&

1980- Best Actress- Atlantic City

reply

yeah as i said i think she should have won in 1991 maybe.

reply

Maybe, Jodie Foster in The Silence Of The Lambs, though, you have to consider how strong and developed Foster's and Sarandon's characters were.

reply

ofcourse i was wrong, i fhad been any other year than that

reply

I'm pretty sure both Foster and Sarandon gave it their all in those performances, its just compared the two and the political climate, Foster's was a bit more implicit where as Sarandon was a bit more direct.

reply

well I don't think Sarandon deserved it in 1991 because Foster definitely deserved it for her flawless Clarice Starling performance. And anyway I did love Sarandon in Thelma and Louise ofcourse but as much as I loved her in Thelma and Louise I loved Geena Davis's performance even more. I loved how she transformed from victim housewife to wild outlaw. And she managed to do it convincingly. But like I said it was ofcourse Jodie Foster's year. I may be a little biased because she's like my favorite actress but it would have been a crime in my book if she had lost. Her performance was so perfect and I loved how it so subtle and controlled yet extremely compelling at the same time somehow. Susan was still great though ofcourse. Both the ladies of Thelma and Louise were outstanding. But there was something special about Foster's Clarice Starling performance. Her and Anthony Hopkins both deserved their Oscars that year.

reply

1996 Best Actress Oscar should have gone to Elisabeth Shue for Leaving Las Vegas. Susan's performance was good, but Elisabeth's was magnificant!

reply

Sarandon was nominated FOUR times before finaly winning in '96
Atlantic City
Thelma and louise
The Client and
Lorenzo's Oil
she deserved it

Susan:I think I stay an actor b'cuz you can't get it right. So there is a challenge to it.

reply

Thank you for taking the time to look it up and post the correct infomation.

reply

I totally agree. I would have given the 1996 Best Actress Oscar to Elizabeth Shue as well. She for me was the best of the year. Such an incredible, emotionally honest performance. I think people felt Susan was owed one because she had been nominated many times before and lost. But I don't think she ever deserved to win. And that's funny because she's always good but each year she was nominated I liked another performance better. She didn't deserve to beat Jodie Foster, didn't deserve to win for the Client or Lorenzo's Oil and I think Elizabeth Shue's performance was more deserving. But she is a great actress.

Predictions:DiCaprio/Streep/Winslet/Fiennes

reply

I agree. Elizabeth Shue deserved to win the Best Actress for that year.

reply

She was also nominated for LORENZO'S OIL & THE CLIENT...

reply

What about Kathy Bates in 'Dolores Claiborne'? I think she should have won.

reply

if there should have been anyone to win that year except Sarandon it would have been Streep... both ladies deserved the oscar that year!! I'm happy Susan got it because it was very deserved... and if oyu watch the video you would see that Meryl jumps out of her seat and went crazy she was so happy for her Meryl knew it was Susan's year...

Don't kid yourself, Francesca you are anything but a simple woman -

reply

Sarandon deserved it so much more than Streep. Bridges of Madison County was great, I'm not denying that but the sheer rawness of Sister Helen Prejean and how she was portrayed was incredible. Sarandon all the way.

reply

I saw this movie the other day and around the beginning I was waiting for Susan Sarandon to wow me. In the end though her performance did not "wow" me, but I thought it was a very moving and very good performance nevertheless. Sean Penn however, completely blew me away! I did not expect it but man, from Poncelet's last day to the end of the movie, Penn was flawless.

reply

They both amazed me. The movie also. Both deserved to win. Sean Penn absolutely deserved it over Cage (who did not move me at all, while Shue did).

reply

Bridges of Madison County was a horrible book, and the movie wasn't much better. Meryl is great in everything she does, but Susan was great. She showed emotion and all the while, she was unglamorous. Susan deserved her Oscar. As for Shue, I agree she did great, but the movie just didn't do it for me. And Nic shouldnt' have won the Oscar that year.

reply

Agreed!

No way on heaven or earth Sarandon deserved that Oscar.
Her acting was capable for the most part, but there were times, especially towards the end of the movie where she was just emoting and you could tell she wasn't really FEELING it and wasn't in the moment.

The only scene I noticed her completely "acting" (and not only acting but hamming it up like she was made of 2 entire hog buttocks) was when Penn/Poncelette admits he killed the boy. Ugh! So hammy she oinked. Soooo-ee!

Sorry, but in no way did she deserve the Oscar for that performance! Unbelievable she was, and unbelievable she beat out so many deserving actresses.
What a travesty.

Sean Penn on the other hand.... superb in every scene -- completely believable!

reply

Sarandon got the Oscar because she hadn't won before and they needed to give this film something, especially since the pricks in Hollywood didn't give it a Best Picture nod.

reply

Meryl Streep? She was so bland in that role. Susan Sarandon was very excellent (way better than Streep) but Nicole Kidman for To Die For and ESPECIALLY Elisabeth Shue for Leaving Las Vegas were even better.

reply

1995 was an amazing year for actresses. They were all oscar worthy and I'm glad Susan won for her amazing performance in DEAD MAN WALKING.But I agree Nicole Kidman (only won the golden globe for TO DIE FOR) , Kathy Bayes(DOLORES CLAIBORNE) or even Jennifer Jason Leigh(GEORGIA) were cruelly overlooked.

reply

And Michelle Pfeiffer for DANGEROUS MINDS and Jessica Lange for LOSING ISAIAH. Not very good movies, but fine performances (better than Streep)

reply

Michelle and Jessia were amazing (Michelle is one of my favourite actresses) but I wouldn't say "oscar worthy".

reply

I'm another who thought Shue's was the best performance of 1995. However I don't think she was robbed or anything, because Sarandon was terrific as well. There's been way worse winners than her.

reply

SUSAN SARANDON

reply

Sarandon is amazing here, but I do think it should have gone to Elizabeth Shue. But I think Sean Penn should have beaten out Nicolas Cage. All four performances are fantastic, but Sean Penn and Elizabeth Shue stand out, for me. Penn's performance is like Acting 101. It's one of those where anyone just skimming thru go "Wow, he's good". It's just so continual and so developed.

Elizabeth Shue goes the deepest of the 4. The look on her face when Nicolas Cage puts back her earring and whispers that stuff in her ear...that's worthy of an Oscar.

But Streep is incredible in The Bridges Of Madison County...sexy as hell.

reply

Finally saw Dead man Walking today and can think of several performances that bested Sarandon in this. In fact, she has had better performances in other films than this. I did not feel convinced of her portrayal as a sister living in a slum or being involved with this case. Penn out acted her as did Celia Weston and Lois Smith in their supporting roles. I am not saying she was bad but that year I can think of several top notch performances like those of Shue, Kidman and Streep. To whoever said that The Bridges of Madison County was a bad film should applaud Streep even more for how she pulled off her role as Francesca Johnson. A truly fine performance that made a marginal story into an interesting and gut wrenching film.

Saradon deserved it. I would have been okay with Shue winning but Sarandon really deserved it. She just had such warmth in her eyes, how could you not be entranced...
