The town Blake visits had people who were really indifferent to each other, ignoring or not caring about what was going on around them, just wanting to be left alone.

We see that Blake is naive and curious. His youth at one point is even the target of inappropriate sexual affection, taken aback by another man stroking his hair without asking if it's okay. The few women seen in the film are not treated very well. William Blake wanted something different in his life and he found it.

They actually pulled stuff from this in the 2013 Lone Ranger movie. Pretty sure Depp modeled his Tonto after the the dude in this movie.
