The title rather puzzling

Just watched this film on Huluplus and I liked it. But the title was puzzling. What was the ceremony? I am assuming the French word - La Ceremonie - translates pretty much into the same thing in English, i.e. the ceremony.

Presumably the killing itself was a kind of "ceremony of purification".

The French have a name for the events leading up to a death by guillotine. They call it "the ceremony."
I stole it from the Roger Ebert's site.

Someone in the top comments said that in the original play that this movie's novel is based the two lead characters have a ceremony where they dance in the family's clothing
