Does this film have a cult status?

Im watching right now, this film used to be my favourite (now Silence of the Lambs, and no im not wierd) and as I watch it just occurs that it really has everything that a great film should have. So my question again...

Is it a cult film?

"Cult Status" is a loose term. Some movies such as Sam Raimi's 'Evil Dead' Trilogy or those of any auteur director just happen to be cult movies because they are praised by small clusters of people. Then there are the mainstream cult movies such as 'Star Wars', 'LOTR' and 'Harry Potter. But, even a movie that is loved by 11 people could be considered a cult movie. Arguably bad film directors such as Albert Pyun and Paul Anderson have cult followings for many different reasons, but their detractors would say that the films they make are NOT cult films. Either way, cult is a dodgy term that signifies nothing really. I personally LOVE 'Copycat' and hold it in high regard along with 'Seven' and 'silence of the lambs', but not many people like it!

I'd call it underrated or overlooked, rather than cult. Megn1 makes a good point about cult films and that it is quite loose, but alot of people simply don't know this film exists. It made $32 million at the box office, which isn't bad, but not enough to put it in the same high-grossing smash hit category that other thrillers like Jagged Edge, Fatal Attraction, The Silence of the Lambs, Sleeping with the Enemy, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, Basic Instinct, Single White Female, Indecent Proposal, Se7en, among others, occupy.

Usually when someone mentions thrillers from the late 1980s-mid 1990s, the ones mentioned above are usually the ones that come to mind, and other thrillers like this one and Strange Days (also 1995) are forgotten for some reason or other, which is a shame since Strange Days and Copycat are two very excellent thrillers lost in a sea of derivative drivel (The Crush, Sliver or Jade anyone?).

I think its very close to reaching the greatness of "Silence of the Lambs" and "Seven". It is very well acted, beautifully shot, tightly edited, brimming with great character and one of the greatest music scores of the 90s.

The truth of the matter is: Copycat is kind of universally-seen as a rip-off of The Silence of the Lambs.

I don't believe this, before the flames come out. But it IS, in fact, seen as such. A suspense-thriller where someone trapped in the mind-set of evil assists police in catching a wild murderer. On paper, you can almost switch a burnt-out lecturer with a psychopathic doctor on a whim. Jodie Foster with Holly Hunter.

This is what has always haunted this movie. That, and its lack of real blockbuster actors.

I'd say it is definately one of those movies that only movie-lovers really know about, but casual watchers don't know exists.

Most of the popularity its gained is due, in large part, to its broadcasts on cable. So, yeah, its got Cult Status.
