He died because Holly Hunter's character had been preaching a sort of
law-enforcement good neighbor policy where you DON'T have to kill
people to deal bad guys. Her previous statement is that, if you shoot
the guy in the right shoulder, he won't be able to return fire.
Well, the guys shoots him in the shoulder, then the bad guy turns
over, uses his other hand a kills the ole boy.
That destroys Holly Hunters self-confidence, and now she's able, for
the first time, to understand a little of the horrible life that Sigourney
Weaver has to live because of destroyed self-confidence.
That means that Holly Hunter has to overcome not only self doubt but
physical pain and the physical symptons--the jitters--of her wound
in order to save Sigourney Weaver and herself.
Brings the force of drama right back into the main character both
physically and emotionally.
