What ever happened to these slick 90's thrillers?

There was a whole run of good (some better than others) serial killer/cop thrillers in the 90's and the genre seems to have just vanish in recent years. I miss them. I can only watch 'Seven' and 'Silence of the Lambs' so many times, I need new input!!!

Do you guys have any recomendations on films I should seek out that might fill the void?

zodiacs probably your best bet, the bone collecter is also a decent late 90's serial killer flick, you've probably seen that numerous times though.

Mr. Brooks was really good!

If you want a mix between a slick 90's thriller mixed with a bit of teen comedy and slasher horror that's pretty recent is probably Disturbia (2007), starring Shia LaBeouf, Carrie Anne-Moss and David Morse.

One of my favorites.

I thought Blink was good (Madeline Stowe).....Taking Lives was enjoyable.

But Copycat....wow. What a great film.

Wow, I'm so glad someone remembered "Blink". Terrific movie with Aidan Quinn and Madeleine Stowe (tremendous chemistry). Shia LeBoeuf's "Disturbia" was very good as well. Like "Copycat", these films have outstanding performances. I've worn "The Usual Suspects" to death, but I still watch it if it's on TV.
Calling "L.A.Confidential" a pure thriller may be a stretch (the canvas is so vast) but it is a cop drama/whodunit of the highest order with great, great performances. Ever noticed how all these films have with thrills AND crackling dialogue? Meryl Streep and Kevin Bacon in the excellent "The River Wild" is a great watch.

All from the '90s - on a slightly lightweight but very watchable scale:
1) Wesley Snipes/Diane Lane in "Murder at 1600"
2) Rachel Weisz, Keanu Reeves, Morgan Freeman in "Chain Reaction"
3) Tommy lee Jones, Susan Sarandon, Brad Renfro in "The Client"
4) Harrison Ford, Ed Harris "In The Line of Fire"
5) George Clooney, Nicole Kidman in "The Peacemaker"
6) Gene Hackman, Anne Archer in "Narrow Margin"
7) Robert de Niro, Wesley Snipes in "The Fan"
8) Julia Roberts, Denzel Washington in "The Pelican Brief"
9) Sam Shepard, Barbara Hershey in "Defenseless" (early film by Martin Campbell "Goldeneye","Casino Royale")

I'm slipping in a 1989 favorite of mine - "The Package" with Gene Hackman and Tommy Lee Jones at the top of their game, and "The Fugitive" director Andrew Davis doing good.

Tell me about it! Now, all the thrillers are edited like car commercials and try to look like "SAW".

Kiss the Girls was decent. Disturbia is great but expect a lot of comedy too.

Thrillers have gone in the toilet. My favorite genre to watch as well. You can try watching the tv show Dexter, it's not bad. It's about a serial killer.

I'm stunned no one mention American Psycho. I love Copycat, one of the most underrated thrillers. A very entertaining movie to watch.

I agree ...

Copycat is def one of my faves ...

Identity with John Cusack is very very good too. ... highly recommend it :-)

Enjoy!

If you like french movies you can watch Crimson Rivers (I love this one) and Have mercy on us all.

Other thrillers you could give a try: Along came a spider, Sea of love, Just cause, In her mother's footsteps, The 4th floor, Double Jeopardy, Malice, Don't Say a Word, What lies beneath. Too lazy to check from which year they are xD

I'm a huge fan of the genre too. Copycat is a great flick. Anyway, recs:

Kiss the Girls, Mindhunters, Identity, In the Cut, Zodiac, Horsemen, Mute Witness, The Bone Collector, The Flock, Untraceable, Mr. Brooks, Shelter (Julianne Moore), Insomnia, Basic Instinct 1 & 2, The Cell, Taking Lives, The Alphabet Killer, The Watcher, Surveillance, Strangeland, Dressed to Kill (80's Classic), Letters from a Killer, Striking Distance etc.

If you are into lots of violence and bloodshed, the 'Saw' series are heavy on the 'hunting for a serial killer' theme. 'Captivity' with Elisha Cuthbert is another one. The one released mainly everywhere is the 'horror' cut and plays out like a torture flick. The 'thriller' version (before the re-shoots) is more like a 90's 'cop hunting killer' thriller.

The upcoming The Factory (2011) and the adaptation of PS3's Heavy Rain (2012) are also ones to look out for. Also, the very short-lived 2005 TV show 'Killer Instinct' might be worth looking for. Involved a lot of serial killers and cops hunting them.

Hey, you guys, don't forget "The Brave One". If you liked (evidently did) "Copycat" you will love "The Brave One" with Jodie Foster (I think it's 2007/8). It plays in a simillar way the thriller with a heavy character study. It's directed by Neil Jordan and, much like 'Copycat', didn't get deserved recognition. Jodie Foster gave, in my opinion, the very best performance of her career in this film and was nominated for Golden Globe. I was rooting for her to get an Oscar nod, but you know how it is with the genre movies; they get overlooked. By the way, Weaver should have also gotten an Oscar nod for "Copycat". It's her best performance next to "Gorillas" and "Death and the Maiden".

I really enjoyed "Dear Mr. Gacy" (2010). based on the book "The Last Victim" by Jason Moss. he wrote a book after corresponding with serial killers while in college. he made a connection with Gacy before meeting him in person. the book is good and the movie adaption is decent. I really enjoyed William Forsythe's performence as Gacy. I recommend reading the book if you can before watching the movie. the film doesn't glorify Gacy at all and it really makes you think.
