It's actually the way alot of insect wranglers re-catch their insects. Alot die of course, but what they do is they use a vacuum with a gentle suction which will most likely NOT kill most of them, and then the foley artists on the movie will re-create the sound and dub it over the original.

When it comes to insects, the PETA have certain rules and even allow for some people to specifically breed certain insects for film industry purposes. But they still take the mistreatment of these creatures very seriously, yet understand that it would be impossible to account for every single insect (especially smaller ones) on a movie set.

I know, it's an ant and there are millions of them and all, but still, they're bred specifically for certain reasons and no animal should be literally killed on film because god knows, life immitates art and would begin a whole trend of animal cruelty...

*rolls eyes*.

I could understand if they were RARE animals, but...ants?

LMAO! I'm with you about where do we draw the line. I agree an ant is not just an ant - it is a living animal which shouldn't be interfered with by humans just like any other living creature. Calling certain animals pets is just semantics as you've pointed out with your rat example.

Hmmmm puzzler. Bit of a puzzle.

Nope, I'm with the other two; those "lines" were arbitrary and illogical. A creature is a "pest" if it's bothersome to you, and that means that its life is less worthy of consideration than that of one you don't happen to label a "pest." My, yes, but that's rational. Sound arguments are not based merely upon what's most convenient for a human.

It's not that killing an insect is an unforgivable crime, of course--if that were the case, many of us would be murderers thousands of times over simply due to all the ones we unintentionally but inevitably step on or smash with our vehicles. Sometimes, unfortunately, killing is a necessity. The point is that dismissing any life form out-of-hand just because it doesn't fit your meaningless criteria is wrong. It's far better to err on the side of showing excessive respect than of showing none whatsoever.

Anyway, yeah, I felt bad for that ant, too, but they can easily survive being Hoovered. The guy with the vacuum probably let him out and brought him back to his trailer. They were all very fine actors, those ants.

I like you, Um. I like largeness...

Excellent return, Sir! Thanks. Small victories are nice. ^^

By whose standard, though? And is it actually a good thing? Ah, whatever. ;D At least I completely agree with that sig!

I agree with Mark1985, either everyone in this thread is nuts or you're trolling, they are ants for gods sake!! They are pests and how anyone cam compare them to pets which we choose to own is beyond me. If it was so inhumane to kill ants why is ant killing powder readily available to buy?? I put it down every summer to stop the little bastards from taking over my wall in the back yard.

Yeah, I agree with you too. It's a f---ing ant, get over it. I can also easily say this: sane people outside of the America would never even resort to having a discussion like this. In most countries in our world people's main problems are probably something like what to eat today and how to make ends meet until the next paycheck as opposed to feeling bad for an ant that got vacuumed in a movie. It wasn't even killed. And even if it was, who gives a f---?
