Peter Foley's background.

I adore this movie, but I wish it delved a bit more deeply into the background history and psychology of the serial killer Peter Foley. What are people's opinions and analysis of his character? I'd say on the surface he suffered some sort of physical abuse by a female, possibly his mother when he was a child. He definetly appears to have a hatred towards women, illustrated by his verbal attacks at Helen. What do you think?

The way he acts around his wife makes it seem like he has intimacy issues. I think he was sexually abused as a kid. Most killers are victims of abuse.

I got the impression that woman was his mother. She looked much older than him. No way did that seem like his wife.

Believe it or not she was supposed to be his wife, she's even credited as such. I also got the impression that she was his mother not just by the way she looked but also how she spoke to him, as though he was looking to her for permission to return to his computer. She appeared much older but if you look at it closely, this could be a clue as to his background. Many men who are sexually abused by their mothers or aunts generally develop a "Mommy complex" later in life and are only capable of having sexual relationships with much older women, so perhaps his wife really was twice his age and that's why, it could've been a very subtle hint thrown in about his origins. Either that or the actress just looks extremely old for her age.
