Who is that woman???

Anyone have an opinion on what the relationship might be between Mr. Copycat and the woman with the little dog in the bed that he lives with? They both wear wedding rings, so one might assume they are married. BUT...it could also be possible that she is his mother forcing him to live a sick lie. It would be appropriate to assume that she is his mother since this movie deals with a lot of common lines between prolific serial killers and one such common line is that most of them have some form of an abusive mother or mother figure. Just wondering if anyone has any more information or even just a compelling opinion.

I'm pretty sure it's his wife.

I read the novel based on the original screenplay for this movie and she is his wife. You are right about Peter being abused though by his mother. In the novel there are flashbacks concerning not only Peter's twisted childhood (he was abused and if I recall- it's been a long time since I read the novel- molested by his mom), but also his mother's (who, in turn, had been molested by her father).

just on the novel.. did you think it was well written? I thought it was really poor. I don't know if the book I read was written after the movie, but it seemed like a straight cut from the movie, the actual writing and language I thought was ordinary.

Just an opinion :)

It was all right, as far as movie novels go. I believe it was based on the screenplay of the film, coming out to coincide with the release of the movie. That's why there are extra scenes in the book, those are the scenes that made it into the script, but either were never filmed or ended up on the cutting room floor in editing. That's the best reason to read a movie novel, at least in my opinion, anyway. (Not to be confused with movies that are based on the book. Completely different!) You get a chance to see- well, read- those "lost" scenes before the DVD ever comes out!

My imppression after I watched the movie was that it was his mother, but in the book it's his wife.

reply

Yikes! She really did seem more like his mother.

Ohhh...Mr. Greenfield!

reply

I thought it was his mother from the way he acted around her. Disgusted with her and himself and afraid.

I went back and watched it a couple of times to see if they ever said who she was and I had just missed it. They didn't. I always assumed it was his mother; I guess even if she was his wife, in a sick kind of way she was his "mother."

It's called a llaaaannce--Hellooooo

I'd agree with your interpretation. I'm pretty sure that they say at some point in the movie that it's his mother. He either calls her mother, or the news reporter says "the home he shares with his mother".

It's his wife. She's credited as "Peter's Wife". She was far too young to be his mother, and I never considered it could be anyone else until I saw all these posts. Since the original screenplay had him being abused by his overbearing mother in a flashback (although this was left on the cutting room floor), I'm guessing he probably grew up to have a dependent personality and ended up marrying a woman just like her (who he ultimately kills in her place).

I was wondering who she was, but now that I know it's his wife, why did he have to bring her water? Why couldn't she get out of the bed and get it herself? Was she sick or paralyzed or something? And how does Peter kill her? Does he kill the dog too?

reply

I guess it was the subtle hint in the credits that gave it away.
Rebecca Klingler.............Peter's wife

reply

I always felt from the first time I saw the movie that she was Peter's wife.

reply

After he kisses her on the forehead and she says "I wuv you" It seems more like they're a couple rather than mother and son. He's like "Yeah, me too." Perhaps she just wasn't getting any from him for a while but doesn't mind....she got her little doggie and her television. She's set.

People talk about the book that is based on this film (or the film that is based on this book) - what is the title or author of the book please? I looked up copycat but couldn't find it. Thanks in advance.

Hmmmm puzzler. Bit of a puzzle.

reply

I assumed it was his mom. She looked old enough to be, at least. I also assumed that she had abused him somehow, thus the weirdness about the goodnight scene between them.
