Misplaced Bug

First off, I absolutely enjoy this movie. Very dark & thrilling. But there was one scene that always "bugged" me:

Re: the David Berkowitz killing – in the side mirror of the woman’s car, the presumed killer is seen parked in a light-colored (pale yellow/tan) WV bug. I assumed that killing was going to be a la Ted Bundy. This was misleading, perhaps confusing the audience. Maybe a better scenario would have been to have the killer acquire the WV bug AFTER the Son of Sam killing as he was preparing to next copy Bundy.

This didn't bother me at all for two reasons. 1. I find it hard to think that Peter would buy a new car after every killing to match the vehicle of choice by the killer he's gonna copy. And 2. Since we don't get a Bundy-kill it is nice to see a reference about Bundy from Peters view.

Besides I heard in a commentary once (for my life I can't remember wich movie it was though) where the director states that "once the audience is ahead of you and know what's coming, they lose interest in watching the film" I find this to be very true. Bundys car is very well known and therefor I think more people than you expected to see a Bundy-kill at this point (I didn't cuz I was ten when I saw it the first time and didn't know about Bundy then) so to mix it up and make it a David B - kill keeps the audience on it's toes. Don't you think?
