Didn't Inspector Monahan attend police academy??

When she shot the asian dude in the shoulder she should have made sure he was down and not within reach of the gun. Don't lower your weapon until the suspect is secure but hey at least she put it into practice at the end.

Why did you do that Maannnn!

He also died because of the stupidity of everyone there! Those police would have had all their weapons drawn by the time the guy had hit the floor. Unless none of them went to police academy either.

reply

I would say he died of his own stupidity in the first instance;

*first he lets a guys out of handcuffs - why would he be in handcuffs? Probably because he is a danger to others

*then once his taker has been shot and neutralised he stands and gives a goofy arsed smile, most people would have jumped clear in case of additonal fire or turned round and kicked him in the nuts in revenge or to prevent any further incident

*then as a close second, the remaining cops 4ft to the left, once the guys is down you think they would have dived on him and had him in cuffs faster than they could eat a doughnut!!

When you talk to God it’s called prayer...when God talks to you it’s called schizophrenia...

I agree he acted somewhat stupidly ...

I would consider it common logic on his behalf to NOT try to reach for his backup when she is already holding a weapon and ready to shoot. Of course she should not just have yelled his name, but told him to get out of the way instead.

He didn't die of his own stupidity. He died because of the script's stupidity.

If it is not in the frame, it does not exist!

Police are taught if they have to shoot their weapons, shoot to kill. There is no wounding in the shoulder or worrying about your Karma. If you do those things people will end up dead. Hence her partner getting killed. She would probably be either fired or demoted. It would probably be difficult for her to find another partner too. I wouldn't want to work with her. Would you?

reply

Trayew gets it. The shoulder wound thing was crap. MJ learned that the hard way. Ya cant rely on an injury like that to take down dangerous criminals.

reply

In that particular instance, the bad guy's shoulder was the only part available for Holly Hunter to shoot without possibly hitting her partner as well.

Furthermore, Dermot Mulroney's character died because of his OWN stupidity. Uncuffing a suspect in a police station so he can have a donut? Nico leaving the key in the drawer was an honest mistake due to the distraction of the fight, but Mulroney's mistake was intentional.

Police are not taught to shoot to kill. They are taught to shoot for mass (torso, not limbs, thus one could hit a shoulder), to disable.

My brother-in-law and good friend are both cops. They were not taught to "shoot to kill" unless under extreme circumstances. They are taught to wound if possible. SWAT and FBI are taught to shoot to kill, but not regular police.

Most agencies teach 'shoot to stop'. This usually means killing your adversary, but that is not the intention. The intent of police (and lawful civilian, for that matter) use of firearms in self-defense is to stop whatever action forced you to shoot in the first place.

I think everyone's missing the real tragedy here, he didn't get to finish his lunch before getting killed.

That scene was terrible. The criminal Asian dude fatally shoots a cop and then gives up and is taken into custody pretty easily? Dude would have been shot a dozen times for that in real life.
