Revisited after a few years

I decided to revisit this. When I first saw it I thought it was a pretty good film. I was quite disappointed on this recent viewing and found it to be lacking depth and substance.

The lecture Sigourney's character gives at the start is really rudimentary, coming from a supposed expert in serial killers. It sounds like a thirteen year old kid came up with it for a school project and contained basic information that just about everyone already knows about serial killers, with no insight whatsoever.

The main serial killer was very one dimensional and I felt the actor portraying him was too child like to portray any real menace. I understand that a lot of serial killers are unassuming and appear harmless but even when you get to see him alone with a victim there's something unauthentic about his performance and subsequently not scary at all. Buffalo Bill from the Silence of the Lambs is one of the most terrifying serial killer portrayals in cinema history (probably an unfair comparison).

Don't get me started on Harry's slapstick performance...

I thought Holly Hunter's performance was good, better than Sigourney's.

Overall, very disappointing, 5/10
