The Hanging *SPOILERS*

OK, maybe it's because I didn't see the whole thing. But the first hanging like how did he have it all set up. I watched it on TV and was a little confused, so if someone can help me that'd be great.

Daryl was hiding in the bathroom. When Helen stood up from the toilet after peeing, Daryl reached over the stall wall and put the chord around her neck. He then pulled the chord and secured it to a device he had set up so that Helen would be hanging above the toilet, her feet barely touching the seat so that she wouldn't die from asphyxiation.

that's all they show in the first hanging scene.

is that what you were asking? You didn't exactly structure your sentence for very easy understanding.

I know this is late, but when it cuts to the hallway with the cop running toward the bathroom, we can only assume that he got there, cuffed Cullum, and shot the thing holding her up, like Foley did at the end.

I think "Captain Planet" is something that should be mandatory to watch nowadays.

Not mentioned in the movie was Darryl Collum's inspiration for the 1st attempt, Helen's hanging. It appears to be a copycat of Russian serial killer Anatoly_Slivko. He too would hang his victims not to with intention kill but force unconsciousness, after which he'd molest the victim if they lived, or cut them up into pieces if they didn't. Hanging ain't that common as a murder m.o., and his story went public shortly b4 this movie came out, so if we assume Collum was also a copycat (reasonable given the movie theme), it'd likely be Slivko. Don't forget, Foley took the name of Peter Kurten, a German serial killer, so it ain't unreasonable that copying other foreign serial killer's m.o.s was not freelancing but another 'homage' to Collum, who started the idea of his copycatting inspired by Slivko.
