It was a stupid & obnoxious exercise. It reinforces the concept of profiling, which is junk science. It also creates a massively false impression of the risk in the minds of the women in the audience, since 56% of homicides where the relationship is known are by someone the victim knew, and 25% are by a family member.
So having a room full of strangers stand up like "These are the people you need to fear" is really misguided.
If *I* were giving the lecture, I would say "don't worry about serial killers; don't worry about random muggers. Simply stay aware of your surroundings, be wary of situations you can't easily escape from, be safe, and remember that you are [x] times more likely to live to a ripe old age than to be murdered."
