Just watched this the other day and noticed the same thing. And she did not put ANY coins in the phone.

No, you don't need to pay to make a collect call, because the charges will be billed to the person receiving the call. You just have to hope that they accept the charges or else you won't be connected.

Do they do call collect for local calls in the US? I thought they were only done for trunk calls. She appears just to dial straight through anyway, which like the OP I thought was rather odd, when she'd just had her handbag (and purse) ripped off.

I couldn't imagine Cher carrying coins around in her pocket even if her designer dress had any one.🐭

We did in the 90's. I'm not sure if you can still do it today.

That must be a mistake. As of comedies maybe there could've been a Beverly Hills Cop crossover. I had in mind Josh is to testify against a mob family and in those past years Judge Reihnold character from Beverly Hills Cop arrested or has taken down many murders and thieves and even people drug dealing. That same robber was attempting a hold up in a mini mart with Billy Rosewood shopping and he pulls out his gun and badge on that robber and captures him and gives him to other LA cops to take in.

There is to be Beverly Hills Cop 4. Maybe there won't be much pay phones then. That actor who played the Robber played a Loan Shark in Love and a .45 and the character with the sideways hat called "Rat" in Crocodile Dundee 2. He also directed Rescue Me that starred Denis Leary.

OMG! I can't believe some people don't know the meaning of calling collect and she did call collect. That's why she says "And I couldn't call Dee because I didn't know the number to party." If she had change she couldn't have just called Dee's cell phone

But that is the thing. I understand collect calls and I did not understand this either. If they wanted to convey she called collect then an operator would have talked to Josh saying we have a collect call from Cher will you accept the charges? But instead she goes straight into talking to him.

I suspect its a film goof (I think its listed as one). But the only other possibility is that Cher's dad had a 'calling card'.
Back in the '90s, you could buy a calling card of time & use it this way.
Maybe Cher memorized the numbers.
