Alicia Silverstone Would Prefer Not To Answer Questions About 'Clueless'

Twenty years after the iconic movie Clueless came out, its star, Alicia Silverstone, would prefer not to answer any interview questions about it. This is what Allison P. Davis of The Cut found out when she interviewed Silverstone at Christian Siriano’s New York Fashion Week show.

Davis apparently had a lot of questions about this particular movie for Silverstone, including whether she and Stacey Dash were still friends. Before she could ask them, however, the actress’ publicist said, “Nothing about Clueless,” apparently hissing this order in her ear.

On the one hand, Beverly Hills’ high school-aged matchmaker Cher Horowitz is still Silverstone’s best-known and best-loved role. On the other hand, the movie came out 20 years ago. It’s fair to be sick of answering questions about it.

So, what did Davis ask Silverstone? She asked about what Silverstone’s son would be nostalgic about in 2050 in terms of pop culture. Silverstone didn’t come up with anything specific or even pop culture related: “I’d like to think they’d be excited about how they protected the Earth. And the fact that they made more creative choices that were also responsible.”

That’s a pretty thoughtful answer. It seems that Silverstone is good at this press thing.

It would take an incompetent interviewer to even ask about a movie made over 20 years ago. If there isn't anything more current to ask then why do an interview at all?

I agree, especially because it's the only thing of consequence she's ever done, movie-wise.

I thought she was good in The Crush, but that was also a super long time ago...

I suppose I can understand her being a bit sick of answering questions about it, but it still seems like a shame to not talk about such a great film!

Maybe she's tired of getting asked about it all the time. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the movie that put her on the map isn't it?

Yeah. It basically catapulted her into superstardom. She immediately became the "It Girl" of Hollywood when the movie came out. Clueless elevated her status to "leading lady" rather than "just another pretty, blonde actress".

Everyone wanted to work with her and she was getting offers for huge movies left and right. But it seems she didn't know how to pick her movies correctly...she picked roles that were not suited for her. Unfortunately, she did a string of box office flops after Clueless came out and eventually her mainstream Hollywood career kind of fizzled out in the early 2000s. She never really had another movie or another role that grabbed audiences quite like Clueless did, so it makes sense that Cher is the role people remember her by.

I assume that the fall in the popularity of the rom com had an effect, too. Silverstone is incredibly charming, but I don't really see her as a character actress. Her ideal role in Hollywood, once she stopped being able to credibly play a teenager, would probably be as a '90s style/ Meg Ryan rom com heroine. Unfortunately, the modern rom com is generally much more a Wedding Crashers/ Judd Apatow sort of movie.

It was also just too much, too soon. There's really less work out there for a movie star versus an actor, and she was in the former category before she could really build a fan base. Emma Stone could at least fall back on the small budget indie comedy genre, which didn't really exist in the mid-90s, and that's really where someone in that position builds their chops (see also: Elizabeth Banks). Silverstone might have had a much better career if she'd actually done the Clueless series, but then again that show's pilot is one of the cheapest-looking things in existence so it's a tough call.
