Why did the late mother mistreat Giorgo?

Yes, I agree with the movie's subplot in that the only real monsters on earth are the ones we created, or in this case, caused. It's not explained why the mother felt such hatred towards her son which incited her hideous abuse of him.

Well, that's easy enough - the love of her life abandoned her, and like anyone else, she's never going to blame herself, so it must have been Georgio's fault. The maid even said she "killed" him out of revenge - if only he'd been that lucky!
