So, about the nature of Giorgio... (spoilers)

Is he supposed to be undead?

I mean, he's been living off water droplets for 40 years and maybe the odd cockroach here and there, yet he manages to move like a strong person, rip off his own thumb without dying of blood loss, and have a melee encounter with a 40-something guy and almost overpower a group of 3 people. He also seemed to be really witty and stealthy for someone who's never had any training in those areas.

Like, imagine how weak you would be if you hadn't seen sunlight ever in your life, and sustained yourself with a few water drops each day. You would be skeletonized, and more realistically, probably dead within a year or so.

Or did the mother die just a few days before the americans arrive?

Well the cat is still alive!
He's been living off bread & salami for ~40years (although I'm pretty sure the cat had some of the salami !!).
Mother died long enough ago to look really dead, but not long enough for either freak or cat to die. Maybe the cat ate some rats in the interim.

I agree about the strength though. All his muscles would have atrophied, but I don't think you watch most horror films for verisimilitude !

I agree with you. There's no way he'd have these abilities after enduring a life of malnourishment, beatings and lack of exercise. He's able to climb around the castle, overpower people and withstand the blood loss from biting his own thumb off JUST LIKE THAT? Yeah I don't think so. He'd be too weak to do anything. Plus not having been in the sun at all, I'd think he would have issues with bright lights. All, not to mention how he'd be suffering from severe mental issues and be unable to communicate, reason correctly or understand anything really. He'd basically be a weakened animal! His whole character isn't very believable.
