People who think this is a reboot:

Because Bruce says he's never been in love yet he went on a few dates in the previous two films with Vicky and Selina. Was he ever in love with them though? He never really knew them for that long. This isn't a plot hole or a continuity error or a reason why Batman Forever is a reboot. Batman Forever is a sequel to Batman Returns.

Y'know what? It doesn't matter. Unless films create some sort of direct continuing story, it's fine to treat them each as separate entities. I do not understand the current desire for continuity and "canon" in film franchises. MCU has made a successful continuing series , with all sorts of intentional continuity. DC has been trying and failing at the same thing lately. I prefer the animated DC material and that includes some films in continuity (The Death and Return of Superman was two films and there are several retellings of the death of Superman arc)) and others (Superman Red Son) totally out of continuity.
I just hope that Wonder Woman 1984 doesn't get all hung up on the DCU continuity.

Just wanted to set the record straight: Batman Forever is a sequel to Batman Returns just like how On Her Majesty's Secret Service is a sequel to You Only Live Twice. In both cases the two films pretty much stood on their own, had a change in the lead actor and were radically different from the one that came before it but they were still in the same universe and the same continuity.

reply

If On her Majestys Secret Service is a sequel to You only live twice, then why does Blofeld not recognize Bond? They are each stand alone films. Looks like I have to teach you a lot on these boards

reply

They saw each other once for about 5 minutes and that was two years ago, chances are he didn’t remember what Bond looked like. I’d have a hard time remembering one person I had one conversation with two years ago not to mention his base was being attacked at the time, definitely diverted his attention from Bonds facial features. It’s clearly a sequel though hence the reason why Bond knows who Blofeld is. You aren’t too smart are you? Clearly your college professor sucks and should be fired

reply

Its a stand alone film. And the meeting in You only live twice wasn't just a casual 5 minute meeting. He clearly would have remembered him in your majestys secret service after foiling the whole volcano plot in the prior film. But on Monday I'm going to ask my college professor this

reply

If it’s a standalone film then he shouldn’t have had any idea who blofeld was at the beginning of the film. I would love to debate your “college professor” on this, I will rip him to shreds .

Also if it’s a standalone film why was there a scene where Bond reflected on his past missions?

reply

What I mean is its not a direct sequel. Bond knows of Blofelds existence from previous British intelligence investigations. And you can't even rip me to shreds, how can you rip someone like my college professor. How many times have I beaten you down in debates. I am undefeated

reply

It’s clearly dependent upon past Bond films therefore you are in no position to say that it’s not dependent upon YOLT. While it may have been a loose continuity there was an established continuity with the early Bond films and it’s clear that OHMSS follows YOLT. Oh so he knows of his existence from previous British intelligence investigations? Please show me where that was established???? The movie makes it clear that Lazenby and Connery are playing the same character therefore Lazenby did experience the events of YOLT. They only saw each other once and Blofeld couldn’t remember what he looked like, it’s not hard to fathom, little boy.

I have totally dominated you and if this professor you speak of taught you then I’ll tear him a new one in no time. Tell him to pm me

Edit : I clearly said that OHMSS stood on its own despite obviously following the events of YOLT, just like how FRWL stood on its own despite clearly following the events of Dr. No, so I don’t know what you’re even arguing at this point. Reading comprehension clearly isn’t your thing.

you know...thank you...THANK you...I am soooo over 'Canon'. I actually hate that word. I started hearing it while reading the SW Extended Universe books in the 90s and it's so dumb. I mean, don't get me wrong; I am all for wanting to keep stories and characters straight. I think the MCU is awesome with all that. But this constant need to be 100% accurate to everything going on is so artistically stifling. I shouldn't have to go outside the movies to get more subtext on characters and stuff. Just like MovieChat said below, it's a sequel, it's in the same world, it holds on it's own. just enjoy it for what it is and use your own imagination to fill in some minor gaps. you don't need comic books and games and prequels to tell you exactly how to think. Because it we act like this over who Bruce loves (That's not a knock on the user, just the idea of the question) then we need to ask ourselves why the hell is Harvey Dent white? And I just don't have time for that, lol

reply

Yes and Id be shocked if any of the forthcoming DC multiverse movies will ever reference Kilmer or Clooney as having been batman (i.e. a cameo from either)

reply

I've never thought of Forever as a reboot, but I think Bruce was pretty clearly in love with Selina in Returns. They connect on levels they couldn't with anybody else, and that's the bittersweetness of their arc. It's one of the best parts of Batman Returns, and I definitely think they were in the big L.

An argument could be made for Vicki, too, since Bruce let her into the Cave. He had to be feelin' something...

reply

"He had to be feelin' something..."

No, he just took the film.

reply

He *also* took the film...

Wink.

I think what Bruce meant by that line was that he felt like he was more in love with Chase than he ever was with Vicki or Selina. People often times refer to past love interests as mere flings or crushes once they've found a new partner in life that they find themselves connecting with much more (though personally, I think Keaton and Basinger had the best romantic chemistry out of all the Batman films). Love tends to change based on what a person currently needs in their life. I think Bruce just had a bigger Batarang sticking out his belt for Chase than those other two (it's Nicole Kidman, what do you expect?).

reply

Batman makes passive references to Catwoman in Batman Forever and Batman & Robin.

I also think we have to think of Batman as who he is. He is a man, men can fall in love just as much as women but he has to stay guarded due to his secret life so he doesn't let many people in. And sadly, we have to remember, he doesn't end up with Chase either as he has another woman on his arm in Batman and Robin. Batman has many loves; they just don't work out long term.
