I'm just in the middle of watching Babe, and just wondering if anyone could please tell me when it's meant to be set? A lot of it seems to be kind of olden days, but I have to say the gift of the fax-machine kind of threw me?!

It was set in modern times (that is, 1995). The rural setting and the archaic lifestyle of the farmer and his wife give the impression the the film could be set in an earlier time.

It was set in the 1990s but the farmer and his wife lived on a farm and didn't seem to have much need for many modern appliances..
The TV set was from the mid 1980s, I used to fix them as a Radio Rentals engineer. Not sure about the fax machine though.

I didn't know when the film was set either, but based on the fact that in the crappy sequel "Pig in the City" is clear that the film was set on modern days, then the first part did as well.
