Why bring Rex to church?

After they get the alarm clock and Mrs. Hoggett says they're going to church they show them get into the car but Rex is with them. Why bring your dog to church? I've always wondered that even as a kid.

I find nothing weird about it.
It's a country town.

It's not uncommon to take your dogs just about everywhere with you in a farm town, especially if you breed your dogs like Hoggett does.

I always thought that was weird too....
But Winn-Dixie went to church, why not Rex? ;)

They probably wanted Rex to guard the truck so no robbers would try to break in and steal anything or take the truck while their in church.
