James Cromwell went vegetarian while making Babe

After working with the animals for several weeks, James Cromwell became a vegetarian. He writes and speaks for vegetarian groups around the US.

Yes he did. God love Farmer Hoggett.

I thought he went Ethical Vegan

reply

Dont even know what that is. I know he stopped eating animals.

Well, some people might give up eating meat and/or dairy because, say, their health requires it. Or because they want to lose weight or something. Whereas other give up meat/dairy because their principles require it--they believe the act itself of eating meat is wrong, that animals' lives are worth the same as humans'. That's an ethical vegan.

reply

That's amazing :)
I'm a massive animal lover but I still eat fish and meat. My friends can't understand the juxtaposition, I really respect people that can give up eating animals!

It's actually not as hard as you might think. I was the BIGGEST carnivore around. As chance had it I hadn't eaten meat for a few days and I thought I'd see how long I could go (GF was vego). 10 years later........... Will admit I eat fish though. My bad. But I can look a sheep/pig/cow in the face and say "I won't be eating you anytime soon." It's a good feeling. I still ADORE the smell of a good steak or roast though.

Without being too picky, he was a vegetarian for quite a while before Babe, he became a vegan during filming. Vegans dont have anything to do with animal products, not just food but clothing treatments etc.

I know what a vegan is. but what's an "ethical vegan". surely redundant terminology? Or are they referring to ethics in business? who knows.

I think the definition of an ethical vegan will depend on the person, how extreme their beliefs. In principle ethical vegans believe animals are on par with humans and that they should have the same 'rights'. This may extend to not using animals for labour such as oxen or horses or keeping pets.
An ethical vegan will have nothing to do with animal products (an extreme example would be any foodstuff dyed red, including wine, as this usually comes from beetle or shellfish body parts) or any product tested on animals or developed using animals.
If taken literally they should not keep pets, ride a horse and would object to guide dogs for the blind, police dogs, search and rescue ferrets etc. You can see how it swiftly becomes a grey area depending on how far one takes ones beliefs.

Also should not get vaccinated, receive antibiotics, have surgery and, pretty much never go to the hospital.
