Why does Hoggett dance?
a) He gots Happy Feet!
b) He's trying to cheer up the little pig.
Choice A is Dionysian, with the resultant cure being accidental.
B is Apollonian amd calculating.
Grace by Faith or Works?

B. Actually, it's also a bit of A, too, but he's too shy to reveal his
"happy feet" to anyone, so he has to wait till there are no other people around
before he can reveal his secret urge to dance.
I'm not crying, you fool, I'm laughing!
The little pig is depressed & refuses to eat, Hoggett cheers him up.
Such a sweet film...

It's wonderful and is my favourite scene in the whole movie. His looking around at the end to see all the animals watching him is priceless.
shareBecause dancing is the meaning of life.
shareIt's a promise. Hoggett is telling the pig that he will never eat him.

This was one of the highlights of the film. I cry every time he sings the song and then dances.

Love He does not want Babe to die
why it was nominated for best picture
AND if you can't understand that
you have no soul
AND THAT'S MY TWO CENTS
I just saw it again after many years. and I don't know how I missed the dancing jig the first time I saw the movie!
It was an Irish or Scottish jig. I am not sure what Farmer Hoggett was Irish or Scottish... But yes, when Hoggett sees the pig take the bottle, his joy is unbridled.
The pig needs to see what his eating has done, it has given the Boss hope.
And Babe has been taught by Ma and Rex and the others how important it is to do well for the Boss.
It tells the audience how the love for an animal can change a man.
I thought it was adorable.
