Because the hero was boring, and the villain was interesting.

I ended up wanting Banderas to win, simply because he had an actual personality.

And if he was protecting Julianne Moore, he wouldn't be sleeping on the floor, eh?

It reminded me of it aswell. Stallone = T-800, Banderas = T-1000.
