This movie is perfection from start to finish. Michael Douglas and Annette Bening have real chemistry. The writing is sharp and clever, the plot is original and moves along at a fast clip. It's funny, romantic without being schmaltzy, and shows how politics works sometimes behind the scenes.
i'm with you, bpollen...the leads are likable, the supporting class is great, and the presidential speech never fails to give me goosebumps, and a lump in my throat.
Lovely dialogue, I often just play the movie in the background while I work. It's so hard to do romance, much less romantic comedy, and the American President was brilliant on all fronts.
Thank goodness the powers that be saw and seized the opportunity of this setting for the West Wing :)
A really great balance between political drama and rom -com with a terrific cast and great chemistry between the 2 leads. The sets too are just so realistic and the main political thread is still front-line news 21 years later.🐭
Light entertainment, a watered-down feelgood movie. No real bite or edge to the thing, even if some stuff going on in the power corridors kind of rings true. 6/10.
I hadn't watch it in a long time, until last week. And when I first watched it, I didn't really care for it (thought it was a little too earnest, and demonized the conservative viewpoint too much (I say this as a proud liberal)). But upon rewatching it I'm really impressed with how good the screenplay is, and I LOVE how smart Sydney is. Anytime she struts her stuff, even in throwaway remarks like when she explains C-STAD to Lucy, I just love it. And the backstage view of politics, the sausage-making process, is great as well. I'm very surprised this didn't get a Best Screenplay Oscar nomination.
I'm with you all -- I just love this movie. and every time I surf (or search) and see that it's on I either drop everything and watch it, or record it for later. I have so much of it memorized -- and it still never ceases to thrill me -- from that first moment they interact -- to that first precious kiss in the "dish room" to the "It turns out I've got a rose garden."
OMG. Just a perfect movie.

I liked the movie but I thought the sub plot about the republicans was simplistic and knocked it down a peg. It not only presents their point of view in the worst possible way but also shows they have disagreeable personalities ( the Dreyfus character). It would have been better to either present the pros and cons fairly or stay out of politics altogether and find another plot gimmick
