is it true Jim Carrey did this movie only because of contract?

he reportedly refused to do a sequel to "the mask" and perhaps other roles.

and i think i remember reading carrey reprised the Ace Ventura role only because a sequel was in the contract of the first film, and he did not actually want to do it.
so, is that true?

I doubt he had a deal where a sequel was an option, since he was still very unknown before Ace 1. He supposedly got 5 mil for this movie, so it may have just have been about the money. Tom Shadyak did not direct this one and Carey has a great working relationship with him. I heard in interviews years later he was not that happy with how it turned out..

I liked it..

I have no idea about his contract, but I do remember reading an interview in which he claims to hate sequels. When Nature Calls is the only sequel he has ever done to date.

If he hates sequels then why did he do Batman Forever?

reply

I think it was hating to do sequels for the character he plays.

wow, and i thought that post of mine is doomed to be overlooked :)

anyway i just remember at first when the movie was released how carrey went out of his way in interviews trying to make it sound like the funniest thing you'll ever see in your life.
then a while later talking about doing it because he had to and not wanted to, which in retrospective kind of explains the sort of deliberate over-selling the movie just to be done with it and that nobody can accuse him of sabotaging the marketing of it.

I do not remember where, so don't quote me on it, but from what I've read he was contractually obligated to do another Ace Ventura if one was green lighted.
With him having to do another, why not do your best and promote it most positive way possible?? if you don't it affects your career as your whole. Unlike in theatre you cannot runaway from film disasters.

He originally agreed to a Mask 2 and it was all over the media and then soon after backed out of it. Its pretty clear he signs on without obligation to do a sequel, if he did not there would have been a Ace Ventura 3, Mask 2, and Dumb and Dumber 2 (<with his involvement)

Although there wear strong rumors of him going against is non-sequel clause for another Bruce Almighty.
