What happened to Kray?

I remember watching this on PBS many years ago and just got the DVDs of both series from Netflix. It's like I'm watching the episodes for the first time again and I'm loving them. However, I'm wondering if anybody knows why Kevin Allen (Kray) left after the first series and was replaced by Mark Addy as Boyle. Not that I'm complaining, mind you, as Addy went on to star in one of my favorite movies ever, The Full Monty. I'm just curious as to what happened.

I belive Kevin Allen was unavailable to film the second series. So a new character was brought in as opposed to a new actor playing Kray.

Addy as Boyle is good but could not replace Kray. It was a shame when he left. I don't know why.

Be fiercefull but restrained, don't steep to their level. Minnie Driver.

Both of them were realy good... I did miss Kray's laugh though.... also i mised the blond girll that sometime's teamed up with him.

Wonderful series full of wonderful actor's though!!!

Still both Kray and Doyle were excellent in support of Grim.!

I hope to retire to Gasforth one day... or Slough p'raps...
