The Thin Red Line is an expression referring to an outgunned military unit holding out against heavy odds, like the 101st Airborne in Bastogne. It's a reference to the stand of the 93rd Highlanders during the Battle of Balaclava in 1854. Basically, they were spread into two thin line of troops (in red uniforms naturally) and held their ground against a numerically superior Russian cavalry force.
