A friend of mine claims he bought this on DVD from a JB Hifi store but I can't seem to find any evidence on the internet backing this up.
Is this available on DVD over here or not?

i actually burrowed the dvds from my public library, if u live in the brisbane area,the city council libraries have them. and yes it is region 4 dvd so u should be able buy it from a dvd store.
What is now proved was once only imagin'd.
Ok this post was started a LONG time ago but i've only just noticed it for the first time. So if the oringinal poster is still keeping an eye on this board (or if any other Aussies are reading this) I tried to buy the show on dvd about 6 months ago and was told that it was no longer available in Australia. So i had to order it from overseas.

Just buy the series from the UK. I bought copies from Amazon UK for less than 9 pounds each & they arrived in 7 days.
The only disappointment was a lack of extras & the season 1 lists the shows in a different order to their original broadcast (at least according to wikipedia).
Its strange that the ABC store in Australia doesn't stock the DVD any longer.
