Kray/ Boyle character change- why?

Does anybody know why the Kevin Allen character is replaced by Mark Addy in Series two?

I thought Allen's character, D.C. Kray was one of the highlights of this much under-rated comedy and have often wondered why the change was made?

reply

After the interfering laughtrack in the DVD release it is the second appalling mistake of this sitcom.

The Kevin Allen character was great and to me personally his replacement was an unexpected letdown. His signature idiotic giggles, sarcastic humour, startled staring at his bumbling boss, and constant devouring of nasty food are amazing.

Andrei

PS Oh, damn, sorry, I did not answer your question - I don't know why.

Kray was irreplaceable. Don't get me wrong, Boyle was funny, too, but Kray was f'n hilarious.

Maybe Allen just didn't want to reprise his role, or had other committments. Or maybe the production crew didn't think the Kray character was all that good for a second series.

Shame though

I think he was too busy working on Twin Town.

Loved Kray. His food talk always made me hungry as well.

He's on the phone and you think he's having a serious job-related conversation, suddenly its "yeah... yeah... Pepperoni..."

I thought both Kray and Boyle were reasonably useless, though Kray more then Boyle.

They were both 'common' and more-or-less the same character.

Boyle was ok but I though Kray was hilarious and one of the best parts of the show.

Boyle was more likable than Kray (in my opinion) - he also got more character development (Boyle).

Kray had some terrific lines, like in the episode "Night Shift":

Habib: "Ah, the noisy nympho at number nine."
Fowler: "Great balls of steaming ooja, is that woman still at it?"
Kray: "No good asking her to come quietly I suppose."
...........................
Fowler: "Put the handcuffs on her if you have to."
Kray: "Tell you what, put the handcuffs on her ankles, that'll solve the whole thing."

I loved his cheeky one-lines and obviously his catchy but still wonderfully immature laugh.

Boyle had a lot of great lines as well:

Grim: "Usually it's jsut a blur. A blur of drug deals, violence, pornography, illicit sex."
Boyle: "Of course sometimes we have to do some work as well."

Boyle and Kray were VERY alike for me, and both of them were of course great characters.

In a tie-breaker though I prefered Kray for his immature lines and laugh.

I liked the Kray character as well.

I love the bit where they're all on their radios in the station going

"Charlie Sierra Foxtrot" "Tango Delta Bravo" and Kray goes "Tango Tango .....Diet lilt and a fanta"

Top class.
