bluray

It would be nice if they would put the 1995-2002 series out on bluray,, not every episode was great but there were a ton of great episodes and since you can find the first 4 seasons of the twilight show on blu-ray it would be nice if they put the original and the 1995-2002 series out on blu-ray,,there would be a ton of sci-fi fans who would love to own the series (unedited versions)

I wish they would, but the chances are very, very slim. Since it was made in the mid 90s to early 00s, The Outer Limits was most likely mastered on DigiBeta or something similar. That means the master of each episode exists only in digital SD resolution. To produce an HD master for a bluray release, you would have to scan all the original film reels in HD, recreate all the digital special effect shots from scrath, cut each episode together anew and create a new sound mix. That's what they did for Star Trek: The Next Generation and it's a very expensive and laborious process. The Outer Limits is way too niche for somebody to invest that kind of money, I'm afraid.

I think the best we can hope for is that someday, somebody will locate the master tapes of the best available quality and carefully scale the image up to HD resolution, perhaps with some mild image enhancement. The resulting image wouldn't really offer HD quality, but the process wouldn't cost all that much and the result would still be quite a bit better then the available DVDs. That's basically what what they did for Farscape. Granted, upscaled SD doesn't sound like much, but the current DVDs don't do the source material justice. I'm so grateful that the Canadians have finally released the whole series on DVD at all. But there is no denying that the image is fuzzy, noisy and several of the episodes are censored. There have to be better master tapes of this show somewhere.

In case you are wondering: It's much cheaper and easier to create HD versions of older shows like The Twilight Zone. Up until the early 90s TV shows were cut together on film. That doesn't guarantee that the master reel is of really high quality, but it's still likely to offer better optical resolution than digital SD tape. But back in the 90s, that tape was cheap and good enough for broadcast, so they used it for many shows. Now, the consequences become clear, unfortunately.

Thanks for clearing that up,,It's what I was hoping to hear,,but Hopefully they will take the time to do it right,,as the dvd quality sucks for the most part,,I have every episode of "The Outer Limits on my computer,,and I love the show,,some episodes are only so so,,some are really good,,and some are masterpieces,,I have always been a fan of Sci-Fi and The Outer Limits,,was one of the best Sci-Fi shows ever,,I really hope they give it the treatment it deserves.

If it's good enough to deserve the money thrown at it, show them by buying the dvds!

If that were the case, they could put the sanitized for TV scenes on the Blu-Ray's as Alternate Scenes in the Bonus Features.

I think they still have the unedited masters since they uploaded them on streaming sites. The edited dvd release was probably a licensing issue.
