is madtv responsible for countless music video parodies on youtube?

i'm not saying madtv is the one that started doing music video parodies but i do think it had a big role in popularizing this style on youtube. i think many people got ideas and influences from watching madtv clips that were on youtube, and made videos themselves in similar fashion, most of which do remind a lot of madtv videos.

after all, the number of this kind of videos have dramatically increased in recent years, after madtv ended, and madtv did make a lot of popular ones which received many views on youtube.

by the way, i'm not a fan of these (unless they're done exceptionally well), and what's really annoying is when we try to look up official music videos, a lot of these lame spoofs come up. lol

They were doing music video parodies on In Living Color before this.

Weird Al was doing parody music videos long before this. The idea of parodying SOMETHING is old news.

What lead the way for amateur endeavours like this is a free distribution channel (the motivating fact that you could have potential audience of millions without paying a dime for distribution) and technological innovation in production and post production - making it easier and cheaper to make decent quality stuff in the first place.

But it's the first point (free distribution) that changed things more radically in a way shorter amount of time. Motivation trumps technological innovation. If it was just as hard and expensive to make audio/video now as it was 30 years ago, something like YouTube would have still spawned a tidal wave of amateur endeavours.
