A point was made by Dinah that Craig was crucial to their survival. When he died one of the characters says something along the lines of "Dinah was right, if she hadn't called him out of the terminal they'd have eaten the plane and us instead."
Huh? Why? I don't follow the logic in that statement. After spending like, 10 minutes explaining the premise of the beer and fizzy drinks they really rushed over this. Can anybody explain? How Craig fit into the overall picture was probably the biggest mysteries that drew me in to an otherwise pretty bad movie, so this pay-off was extremely disappointing.
Toomey screams, causing the Langoliers to chase him, buying the plane time.
By eating Toomey, the are now attracted to him; via where he's been. So they follow him footsteps, eating the terminal next, buying the plane more time.
But of course . . . Toomey was on the plane . . . so yeah, after they're done with the terminal, they have one last thing to go after . . .
Dinah said to Toomey (via psychic powers) "run around the plane, run away from the plane". Good thing Toomey never again went into the plane, as then the Langoliers would have followed his footprints to the plane first.
Edit: Also, because they're following Toomey's foot steps, they very likely at Don Gaffney too, thus now they're also attracted to his footsteps too. Thus now their will to go after the plane gets even stronger . . .
That's a really good explanation and I never thought of it that way.
I always just thought that they went after Toomey and that's what bought them the time to take off. But really they gobbled up Toomey in a matter of seconds, so it makes sense that they retraced his footsteps which bought them more time. I'm gonna add your explanation to the FAQ :)
