Favorite and Least-Favorite Patients/Characters?

Least-Favorite: Dom Irrera. Wow, that routine doesn't get repetitive at all. Ha ha, the threat of potentially-violent homosexual obsession makes people uncomfortable! Do "Fallin' Hard for Dr. Katz" AGAIN!! (And naturally, Irrera stuck around for the entire series. Yargh.)

Favorite: Kevin Meaney. I'm on the fence on "screamer" comedians (Lewis Black, Gilbert Gottfried, Bobcat Goldtwaith, et al), but Meaney's tales of his psychotic family memories always make me bust a gut. "NO, DADDY! I DON'T WANT TO EAT THE BIRDS THAT FALL FROM THE SKY!!" and the "room service" bits ("Taaake a chocoleet! Taaake-a two! Taaaaaaake-a two!!") are my absolute favorites from the show.

Non-Patients: Every fan talks about Laura, but Stanley and Julie never get enough love. I always perk right up whenever I see the Diablo's Diner and Jacky's 33 signs because my favorite characters are about to show up. Julianne Shapiro never did anymore roles (or anything else in TV and movies, according to IMDB) which is too bad. I could watch an entire series based just on Stanley, Julie and Katz.

Your turn.

I can't really think of any guests that stood out for me... but I agree 100% with the Stanley and Julie comment. Comfortably my favourite part of the show. They have such great chemistry. Stan and Katz are on the same wave-length and you can hear them genuinely laughing during the skits.

I thought Ray Romano was good on the couch. I also really like Stan & Julie.

reply

I'd have to agree, Ray Romano had the best scenes.

My least favorite would be Judy Tenuta. I found her annoying as a patient.

Outside of the office: Ben is definitely number one. I love the conversations with his father. I'm also a fan of the actor.

I thought Todd Barry was the funniest. Bob Odenkirk is my favorite person ever so I enjoyed his appearance. Character design-wise, I'd say Winona Ryder's outfit was the best!

My favorite CHARACTER is Laura, of course. Hot.

Least favorite was proably Sandra Berndhart...

I think Dom's one of the best actually. If I had to pick a least favorite, it'd be Andy Kindler. His material sucks.

Jake Johanssen is great, but my favorite is Steven Wright. His interactions with Dr. Katz (and Ben) were hilarious. Ron Lynch's material deserve note though for just how pathetic it is. I like Sandra Bernhard on here too, it seems like an actual therapy session. She's in the same episode as Todd Barry and the two complement each other pretty well.

Non-Patients: Todd from Vic's video. He and Ben had good chemistry.

Come to the board for Jon Vitti!

I always thought Winona Ryder was the worst. She just wasn't particularly funny. I could imagine that she was a fan of the show and asked to appear. Since she was a pretty big star back then I'm sure the producers jumped at the chance. But when she got there she just had nothing funny to say.

As far as the best, I can't remember who it was, but it was the guy who did the bit about manatees and writing postcards from vacation: "They have big buildings here. I like food." I think it was the same comedian.

I really never cared for most of the psychiatric sessions - I find standup comedy (or its lay-down-on-a-couch equivalent) pretty tedious.

Jim Gaffigan did the postcard bit. I still think about that joke and it makes me giggle to this day.

Favorites: Patton Oswalt, particularly when he is trying to coach Dr. Katz into being a supervillian. The Smothers Brothers only did one episode, but it's pretty funny watching them interact, and Dr. Katz can't get a word in edgewise.

I never saw Ron Lynch in anything else, but I laughed my ass off when he was playing recordings of different celebrities endorsing his comedy, and never bothered to change his voice.

Least favorite: Ben, particularly during the episode where he wins $500 in the lottery, and when he shows up to the office during the mask episode.

As a side note, I have all the DVDs, and like to put them in on repeat at bedtime, so I've gotten burned out on many of the episodes that appear first on a disk.

Oh man if you don't like Ben why are you watching this show? I absolutely LIVE for Ben, I think he is one of the best characters in television history.

I can't think of absolute worst comedian but I have to say as much of a fan as I am of this show there are certain guests that make me want to punch a hole in my computer screen. Most recently Sam Brown, he gets so aggressive and just starts screaming and won't stop - Dr. Katz mocks this a little by trying slip in little "stop....please stop" 's, but it doesn't take away from the fact that he's a pain of a guest.
