I know Scream was considered to be the best horror/slasher satire film of the 90s... but I always thought it was overrated. Personally, I always thought New Nightmare was a far more insightful and entertaining deconstruction of horror films. Give Wes Craven credit, it did the concept better the first time around... in my opinion anyways. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tam-q9GR87Q
Agreed. This did what Scream did, only it did it better and did it 2 years earlier. I seriously think this is one of the most grossly underrated horror films of all time.
Scream is a great film, but that's where it ends. The sequels are terrible and I never even bothered with part 4. The story after part one is beyond absurd with the endless amounts of people who hate Neve Campbell's mom and want to kill her for what her mom did. It worked in the first film, but then it just got stupid. Anyhow, just because it was a huge hit, people seem to want to pretend like it isn't enjoyable. It was a clever film and a lot of fun.
In any case, New Nightmare did do it first and is very enjoyable as well. Rather than satirizing horror in general, this film gets to play around with some real-life outcomes such as the way a child murdering monster can become an American icon beloved by kids everywhere! I am so glad that Wes made this film, as it actually did the impossible and made the pop-star Freddy scary again!
But hey, it is not a competition. Scream is great, and so is New Nightmare! No pissing contest needed.
- - - - - - - I am not a fan. I just happen to enjoy movies. Fans are embarrassing.
New Nightmare or what I prefer to call it Wes Craven's New Nightmare is way better than Scream in many ways. Scream to me seemed like a bad High School teenage drama with some forced Horror elements in it and it seemed to be a big middle finger to the genre by being so damn Self Masturbatory and saying Horror films are for idiots. Wes Craven's New Nightmare on the other hand is a clever film that manages to do something different with a franchise that was put to rest in the previous film.New Nightmare should receive all of the respect and attention Scream got.
I'll have some of what the OP is smoking. Scream was hugely important for the horror genre in the 90s. The opening scene alone puts it in the special category.
I agree that it is much better. Scream seemed to be geared more towards rowdy teenagers and it tries to be hip and trendy, but this film is more straightforward and interesting.
