You love ze beetle?

I know Thumbelina gets a lot of flack for its messages, but I think some people try to read too much into it and are looking for ways to twist what is actually being said.

I absolutely love the scene with Jacquimo and Thumbelina after she gets away from the beetle ball. Thumbelina tells him how the beetle called her ugly and Jacquimo asks if she loves the beetle, to which she replies something like, "No, I love Prince Cornelius." Jacquimo asks her if the prince thinks she's ugly and she tells him that he doesn't, he actually thinks she is beautiful. So, Jacquimo points out that it shouldn't matter what the beetles think.

The Prince loves her and thinks she's beautiful. If that makes her happy, she shouldn't worry about what anybody else thinks. :)

reply

Yeah, but that's like saying "You shouldn't care about your looks, unless the prince thinks you're beautiful".

"Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!"

Or, "You shouldn't care about your looks because the person you LOVE thinks you're beautiful." His title doesn't make a difference. Thumbelina was clearly falling for him before she knew he was royalty.

reply

True, but suppose if the person she loved didn't say she was beautiful (though he never said she was ugly either). I guess I was over-analyzing that line.

However, I still don't understand how Jacquimoe knew where she was? Wasn't he suppose to be looking for the Veil of the Fairies? If so, then what stopped him?

I'm not sure. He did know where the mole's hole was though because that is where he... fell(?), after he got the thorn in his wing and winter began. Maybe he was flying back to tell Thumbelina he found the veil and saw her?

I honestly cant see how anyone could think it meant anything else. it must be the same people who think Snow White's moral is not to take food from strangers.

Everyone wants to feel attractive and, especially, desirable to the one they love. They're lying if they say they don't. It's a basic human desire, especially for females.

We're collecting dust, but our love's enough.
