thumbelina was a dumbass

ok don't get me wrong...i love this movie..but watching it now for the first time in 10 years i notice that thumbelina was really dumb. couldnt she have asked the bird to fly her home in the beginning?? i know then there wouldnt be a movie blahh blahh blahh but come on. and instead of agreeing with the fricken toad to becoming a star, she could have just told them all to f()ck off lol. and then listens to a mouse to become a gold digger. **sighhhh i miss being woung and not noticing these stupid ass things

I don't have the strength to stay away from you anymore.

She was impressionable.

Holding a grudge is like taking poison and waiting for the other person to die.

reply

ok so if you were KIDNAPPED and your kidnapper told you they would make you a star would you forget the fact that they kidnapped you and just be all happy happy joy joy im gonna be a star cuz i was kidnapped by mediocre performers?? or if your boo died would you all of a sudden think of marrying a rich guy because someone told you to do it because he had a lot of money???

I don't have the strength to stay away from you anymore.

Haven't you ever heard of that thing where a kidnapped person falls for the kidnapper? It happens. Ok so she was quick about it...but we're limited on time with a cartoon. AND her guy was dead (so far as she knew). She was in shock and mourning and naive. lol Anybody else feel kinda dumb debating a cartoon character?

Because you can't have a scary movie if you leave the shower curtain open!

Thumbelina was innocent and could see the frogs were harmless, so she politely said she'd go home and then more firmly requested it after the ridiculous mother frog said she'd stay to perform.

reply

I love the movie a lot. But I ALWAYS thought that. Seriously why didn't she just asked Jacquimo to just fly her above to see her house?
But I also knows she used her voice(&looks) to get what she wanted too.
Cuz she asked the beetle to fly her up there and made him a deal and was being all flirty.

I have this movie now, I love it.

& Sorry it does seem wrong for her to just get with ANY guy just cuz her boyfriend/fiance died.

I get that, but come on. it was only a few months. She found out 2 days later that he died. and is like. Omg, Mole. Im gonna marry you xD.

Did she forget about the quest to get home? xD lol

reply

[deleted]

Yah, but it was her being really childish. She could have done so many things to change it. But it IS a children's movie. lol

Still a good movie nonetheless

reply

[deleted]

If she was thinking positive she wouldn't have thought the journey was impossible.
Specially since thats what you said, and the whole theme of the movie is. "Nothing is impossible"

reply

Yes, but she was already living with the field mouse and they were fine she didnt have to marry a mole. She could have waited a few months when spring would come. I mean look how fast it came when Cornelius was alive xD

She made really dumb choices. lol.

reply

[deleted]

I know that. But before the mouse even asked.
She was already living with her. All thumbelina had to do was stay with the field mouse for like a month, winter would have been over, and she could go back on her quest. She didnt have to marry a mole. Who cares if he could have took cared of her? She did refuse, but it was STILL her choice to go on and do it.

& as I said so many times, her actions were stupid.

reply

[deleted]

Your reasons for her actions dont justify her. Because they are idiotic actions.

I don't know if it changes or not, I'm rewatching it for the first time in years and all... Still early on at present... but...

But how would Flying J pick her up? With his feet? He's wearing boots.
And he's got an awful small mouth to be picking her up.

EDIT:
"Get on my back, get on my back, I will take you to him!"
Yep, he coulda taken her to safety, after all.

reply

AH HA!

Thank you :D

reply

his wing was broken..he couldn't fly -.-

i like these clothes i like this hair, it's not emo it's not anything ¬¬

reply

Not through the entire film. He was flying around looking for help before he even hurt his wing.
He could have saved her from the toad, and they could have flown around and BOOM
There was her house
Case solved

you think this story is stupid because its a fairy tale about two people, young people at that falling in love at first sight?? Hello! every fairy tale in exstence is about two people falling in love at first sight.
granted i dont believe in it myself but i think its a wonderful concept.

the thing about Tumbelinas choices is you have to remember shes actually very young and therefore both naive and innocent. She doesnt fully understand everything. Who knows really how much time had passed since she came out of that flower and not to mention she was really only about 16 years old.

She was kidnapped, lost, frightened, a very small creature in the middle of a very large world with everything she knows gone and ripped away from her.

yes she did get caught up in the song with the toads but she never ever intended to stay with them cause her goal was always to get home and meet with cornileis again.

With the beatle i dont think that was her fault at all cause he really did just snatch her up and take off.

and with the mole again you have to look at the larger picture of all the pressure and fear and everything that has happened to her piling up all at once and weighing down on her. She just found out that the love of her life was dead(or rather beleived him to be.), she was in mourning and greving over the loss, She felt hopeless and believed that she would never get home and see her mother again, not to mention the extreme amount of guilt she must have felt thinking that cornelious died trying to find and rescue her,all these thoughts and emotions were just piling up and finally overwhealmed her.

Marrying the mole i think was just her way of saying 'i give up' she was in what she felt was a hopeless situation and didnt want to try anymore. She figured the mole could take care of her and that she was live a safe, fairly comfortable life with him. It wouldnt be the life she wanted or dreamed about but atleast she wouldnt be fighting the hopeless situtaion that was trying to get home. And with cornelious gone she feels as though she would never love anyone else again anyhow so what was the point in trying.

take all these things into account and her actions done seem as shallow or stupid.

I always thought that Thumbelina was naive, hence her stupid decisions. She lived a very sheltered life, s her being "dumb" makes sense.

Me either. Thumbelina wasn't a dumbass, she was naive and gullible because she was young and inexperienced. If anyone who answered this thread can say they didn't make a mistake as a teenager then I am Mrs. Santa Claus.

I'll chalk this up to a childhood (instant adulthood?) growing up with only farm animals and a senile old grandmarm to keep ya company not the most intellectually facilitating of upbringings.

If you think that makes her stupid, you must think Ariel, Belle, and Rapunzel are mentally retarded. They do actually unintelligent things, whereas Thumbelina was literally born yesterday and had never seen the world or met anyone else before.

Critical thinking is overrated anyway, right, guys? And common sense is apparently not so common.

We're collecting dust, but our love's enough.

reply

Okay, you've got a few good points there. That said, I don't think it's Thumbelina's flaws that make her a bad character, but her sheer lack of personality. Literally, we know nothing about her other than wanting to meet people her own size! I like that idea, but the movie does a poor job of executing it. And yes, she's way too passive and pessimistic to do anything by herself (and I literally mean anything).

In short, she's not dumb, she's just poorly written and underdeveloped.

The fairy tale was written in 1835, and Thumbelina was never intended to be smart or a feminist. It's just the story of a tiny being's adventures, and a lot of the things just happened to her, rather than her taking charge--that is a modern idea of woman's role which didn't exist back then. Marrying the prince was always the ultimate goal for any fairy tale heroine. In the original tale, Thumbelina didn't meet the prince until near the end, so it was more understandable that she considered marrying the other creatures she met along the way, because she was small and helpless and needed protection.
Fairy tales today are considered bad role models for girls, but we can still enjoy them for what they are, otherwise we might as well not read any literature from centuries past.
