Animation style for Thumbelina....

I grew up on Don Bluth films and have seen most of them many times, but until tonight I hadn't ever watched Thumbelina. I was immediately taken by the character design because, not only is it varied, but oftentimes it looks like the cartoons of the 1930's. I thought that was kinda cool, since Don Bluth characters--though quite distinct compared to other animation studios--usually are of a familiar type. I found it interesting to see a little experimentation and perhaps, a bit of homage thrown in there.

Anyone else notice the touches with the older style? Thoughts?

I agree. I personally don't understand the hate for this one. The layered levels of the environment and the look of the insects as well as the changing of the seasons really reminded me of some animation from the golden age. This was a beautiful looking film.
