They needed 7 symbols to open the Stargate. They had six. Why not just try each and every symbol as the 7th until they got it?
As for coming home, Earth side could have just reactivated the Stargate from their end every day at a certain time. (Edit: they mention later in the movie they have to turn it on from their end)
I actually really like this movie, but the more I watch it the less sense it makes.
It's been a long time since I've seen the movie, but if they tried different symbols, would that not have sent them to different places? I mean they didn't know what would happen right? He was the one on Earth who worked out that it was a stargate to begin with, so why wouldn't they take him along in case something did go wrong on the other side. The military men would have just blown it up.
