In the beginning James Spader is called in and seemingly discovers clue after clue about the Stargate only to be revealed the army is ready to go and only needed the 7th symbol. They clearly played him.
They even had a chart map ready and a probe.
I think they thought that they were prepared to go but still needed a translation of the last symbol. Because once they were on the other side they were stuck, showing they didn’t know everything. They took a leap before looking, and used him as a failsafe.
shareI think so too... weird that the movie wanted us to think he was the smartest at the start yet the military had it all figured out but for the one symbol.
