Why are the special effects laughed at?

This is a serious question. I saw this when it was released in 1994 & even now, 20 years later, the whole film still holds up. The special effects are fantastic but any time the Anubis-head wearing guards are on screen, whoever I'm watching it with tends to laugh at it. They certainly don't look bad!

I've never had that, most of my friends have said of the Anubis reveal in the pyramid "Holy crap!!" or "That's badass" never have they laughed at it...

reply

the only thing that looked fake was one pull back to view the whole pyramid which looks like CGI or a matte painting

I personally loved the shot with the piramid in front of the sky with multiple moons where they first realised they were actually on another planet.

I've never had anyone laugh at the effects. Everyone that's ever watched the film thought it was pretty cool. Sounds like a bunch of kiddies who make fun of anything that isn't brand new.

I am not a fan. I just happen to enjoy movies. Fans are embarrassing.

The only bad effect is found in the scene where O'Neil disengages Anubis' helmet during their fight. The rest are all top-notch.

A Superman without trunks isn't worth watching or reading about.

The effects are great in this movie even by today's standards.

Towards the end of the movie when the small fighters were shooting up the people outside the pyramid, you could see the strings on the ship. Looked really cheap.

the effects are mostly terrible. that weird yak thing looks like a chucky cheese animatronic, and the ships all have very visible strings attached to them. dont even get me started on the alien helmet effects. i know it was 1994 but cmon. tremors and the thing came before this movie and had much better practical effects with half the budget.

The SFX were definitely good — I remember stargate was prominently featured when DVD players were “new” it was the display movie at sams club, Walmart, compusa, and so on
