shareYou got to hand it to Spader; he basically said *beep* you" to Hollywood standards. Honestly; Spader is what an average, 56~ year old American man looks like. He had his time in the spotlight, and was even shredded at one point (look at him in "Supernova", ripped and unrecognizable, filmed around 1997~).
He's not trying to fake it, with an unrealistic body, diet, and fake hair. He also admitted he did it for his role in "Blacklist"; he wanted to look like a bad guy. Kudos to him. Great actor, and relying on his talent more than his looks to get him work. I for one miss his younger look; I will admit I don't like bald and chubby James Spader, but he's still a great actor.
If I didn't know any better, I'd say he was refreshingly without vanity. I've been enjoying him in The Practice, where he's often the shortest man in any given scene. He was doing an interview and volunteered that he was 5'10". He's not 5'10" and the shortest guy in almost every scene. So he has Hollywood Short Guy Syndrome. And you say he claimed he went paunchy for The Blacklist? ๐ Good one. He'd developed quite a belly on him -- along with a doughy face and a double-chin that had turned into a wattle -- way back when he was working on Boston Legal.
The good news is the last time I saw him being interviewed he was down to a pretty good fighting weight. He looked like he'd gotten a chemical peel. He still needs to work on that double chin, but he needed to so that since he turned 40. It actually affected his acting. When younger, he'd tuck his head to deliver lines they filmed from above. Later, he started stretching his neck and looking down his nose. The only tone that goes with that is "haughty," and he did that even into The Blacklist.
Which is too bad. He could have been a great actor. His body has been a handicap for his whole career.
Goood God !!! Lay off the Oreos
