Payne didn't really need 3.7 million

I mean he had a home, perhaps a car as well, so he didn't need all that money. Trust me. If I lost a thumb or even an arm in the line of duty, all I would need would be to find a girlfriend who would love me.

reply

What he needed was to get back at them for treating him like shit. He apparently felt 3.7 million would do that. And what if he wasn't able to find a girlfriend to love him?

reply

To get back at who? The bus passengers did nothing to him. And who was more evil? Howard Payne or The Joker from The Dark Knight?

reply

I'm pretty sure the bus passengers weren't the ones who had the pay the ransom. It was the city of Los Angeles.

Good lord, you're back. I thought the question was if he was worse than Cyrus from Con Air?

reply

I meant that how would blowing up a bus with innocent people punish people who wronged him? Also he lost his thumb in Atlanta. Not in Los Angeles.

reply

How does it matter where he lost the thumb? He's living in LA and that's where he's getting his meager pension. It's the authorities he wants to get back at and taking its citizens hostage is a effective way to extort money.

reply

Yes it is. I wouldn't be happy with a tiny pension either. But why did he want to blow up the bus after he got the money? That's what my question was.

reply

Well, he didn't exactly have time to dismantle the bomb, now did he? Keanu went after him and then the paint bomb went off and ruined the money.

reply

Couldn't he dismantle the bomb remotely?

reply

Perhaps, but when did he have the time for that?

reply

wouldn't he be able to disarm it with the detonator?

reply

No, because the detonator he was carrying was for the bomb Sandra was wearing.

But honestly, I don't think he cared for the people on the bus, they were just collateral damage.

reply

So I don't think he would go out of his way to disarm the bomb because I don't think it could be done in a minute. It would take time. Am I right? But who do you think was more evil? Howard Payne or Cyrus from Con Air? Personally I think that Cyrus was more evil because he was always a bad guy whereas Payne became evil after he felt he was wronged. Just my opinion. What do you think?

reply

I haven't seen Con Air in a long time, but yes, he did seem more evil.

reply

I mean Payne became evil because he felt he was wronged. You see my point?

reply

Yes, I see your point.

reply

So if I understood correctly he wasn't the type of bad guy who enjoyed hurting people. The people on the elevator and on the bus were just collateral damage. Correct?

reply

Yes, he was not a sadist.

reply

He felt that a bomb was made to explode because it's something he created and he wanted to feel important.

reply

Yes, that's it.

reply

was it? I havent seen the film in a while.
I thought he exploded the bomb to prove he was serious about the next one - the bus , or because they didnt pay up that time round or something , not for fun

reply

I was referring to the other poster's comment about Payne feeling that "a bomb was made to explode". This was almost literally said in the movie.

I don't think he already planned the bomb on the bus, he seemed pretty pissed off about Jack ruining his elevator scheme that he planned for years. He expected the money the first time around, but he let the second bomb go off simply because the police tried to intervene. I think he wants his bombs to go off, everything started with a bomb blowing up the cables of the elevator. And as the first scene shows, he has no problem killing innocent people to get to his goal. I'm not sure the people in the elevator would've gotten away alive.

reply

"So I don't think he would go out of his way to disarm the bomb because I don't think it could be done in a minute. "

of course it could . he built the bomb , he had all the time in the world to install an off switch. a remote one .

reply

"how would blowing up a bus with innocent people punish people who wronged him?"

His plan wasnt to blow the bus up , it was to get $3.7m

reply

Without a thumb, how are you supposed to please this supposed girlfriend? I guess she'd have to look past that enormous flaw.

reply

You would just deal with the fact that you could never please a woman. EVER

reply

is thumb some sort of euphemism i wasnt aware of?

reply

He was psychotic. I thought Hopper pulled that off very convincing.
