Widescreen Version
Why hasn't this been released in the US in Widescreen? It's only available in Full-Frame (Pan&Scan). Why is widescreen only available overseas?

shareI just watched this off of NETflix through my XBOX 360 last night and it was in widescreen. I couldn't tell if it was true WS though. Might wanna check into that yourself for a fuller answer.
shareI don't think it is, I checked compared to some screen shots and it looked like it had been cropped still.
I used the screen shots from pal version on this site and paused the roku.

What i saw on the roku didnt look true.
because Universal are idiots I suppose
back in 98 I did a titty comedy for Skinemax. Sex Camp, ya remember it?
I just posted in another thread this same thing in regards to the comparison found in the link above...the Region 1 full frame version, the sides of the picture are still cropped and show less on the left and right sides than the widescreen does. In the region 2 widescreen version, the bottom and top have been cropped and show less that the full frame does. In either version, you are STILL missing something.
sharethe laserdisc is 1.85:1 as per theatrical release.
shareYou can download a widescreen version off of iTunes!
shareThat's interesting, I thought I read recently that the new movie is currently over at Universal Studios -- perhaps this means that Universal has struck new masters in preperation for re-releasing the mid-90s movie.
I had hoped for some good news when the movie was still over at Sony -- but after seeing what they executives there allowed to happen to The Green Hornet (in giving it to Seth Rogen), I'm kind of glad that they let the rights lapse. Hopefully they'll still release the movie serial (original produced by Columbia Pictures).
There's been an HD master for a few years now. I saw The Shadow on HDTV a few years ago it was in 1.78 aspect ratio. You can download an encode of that HDTV rip off of some filesharing sites.
The Region 2 DVD release has the correct aspect ratio of 1.85. The top and bottom are supposed to be cropped.
What ticks me off the most about this is that it had two region 1 DVD releases. One had DTS sound. Both were pan & scan.
I keep hoping there will be a widescreen BluRay or something.

On the bright side, the DVD will probably be rereleased around the time Sam Raimi's film comes out.
